Nova Charcounted Fields Laravel Package

Getting Started

  • Treat v1.0.0 as a brand-new dependency, not an upgrade. The release note (“fresh copy of deleted package”) means there is no reliable version history, changelog, or semver continuity to lean on.
  • Start by confirming package identity: run composer show vendor/package and inspect composer.json for the package name, PSR-4 namespace, PHP/Laravel version constraints, license, and extra.laravel.providers / extra.laravel.aliases.
  • Install on a scratch branch first: composer require vendor/package:^1.0. Do not reuse old constraints from a previous lockfile until you have verified they still resolve.
  • Look first at the README installation section, then the service provider and any config/ file in the package. Run php artisan package:discover -v to confirm Laravel auto-discovery is working.
  • First practical use case: restoring functionality that disappeared when the original package was deleted from Packagist or removed from your dependency tree. Install it, publish config, run your existing test suite, and compare behavior against any archived vendor/ copy or fork.

Implementation Patterns

  • Prefer container resolution over direct instantiation. Inject the package’s services through constructors, or use its facade only if one is explicitly documented.
  • Publish only what you need: php artisan vendor:publish --provider="Vendor\Package\ServiceProvider" --tag=config. Avoid publishing migrations or assets until you have confirmed they are required.
  • Wrap the package behind a small application-level adapter or interface. Because this is a republished copy of a deleted package, isolating its public API makes future vendor renames, forks, or replacements much cheaper.
  • Pin the version explicitly and commit composer.lock. For a v1.0.0 reset, ^1.0 is reasonable, but avoid floating * constraints.
  • Add contract tests around the package’s public behavior in your own test suite. Test the integration points you rely on, not the package internals.
  • If the package dispatches events or supports queues, listen to its events rather than modifying vendor code. Check the provider for bindings you can override in your own service provider.
  • In CI, run composer validate, composer audit, and a smoke test against the minimum and maximum Laravel/PHP versions you support. This is especially important when provenance is unclear.

Gotchas and Tips

  • Version reset: v1.0.0 has no semver relationship to the deleted package’s old tags. Old constraints such as ^2.3 may fail to resolve, and old upgrade guides may not apply.
  • Possible rename: a republished package may use a different vendor name, namespace, config key, or database table prefix. Audit composer.json, config files, and migrations before assuming drop-in compatibility.
  • Trust and provenance: check Packagist for an “abandoned” flag, security advisories, and whether the repository history is intact. A deleted-then-republished package can lose download history and maintainer continuity.
  • Silent discovery failures: if extra.laravel is missing or malformed, auto-discovery will not register the provider. Verify with php artisan package:discover -v and register manually if needed.
  • Cache clearing: after install or config changes, run php artisan config:clear, php artisan route:clear, php artisan view:clear, and composer dump-autoload. If production uses config:cache, republish and merge config before caching.
  • Config conflicts: an old published config file may remain after the package is reinstalled. Diff it against the package’s current config and remove stale keys.
  • Extension points: prefer publishing config, binding interfaces in your own provider, and listening to events over editing files in vendor/. If the package exposes no extension points, keep the adapter layer thin and documented.
  • Debugging: use composer show -t to inspect dependencies, enable a package-specific log channel if available, and diff the installed vendor/ directory against any archived copy of the deleted package to spot behavioral changes.
