Json Rpc Cache Bundle Laravel Package

tourze/json-rpc-cache-bundle

A Symfony bundle that adds a caching layer to JSON-RPC services, letting you store and reuse RPC responses instead of hitting the backend on every request. Configure cache rules per method to cut latency and reduce load on upstream services.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Caching layer for JSON-RPC endpoints (if you have any): This package appears to provide response caching for JSON-RPC services. As a PM, the decision it informs is whether to adopt an off-the-shelf cache for RPC-style APIs versus building caching into your own service layer — relevant if your roadmap includes high-read JSON-RPC surfaces (dashboards, mobile sync, internal service-to-service calls) where repeated identical calls dominate traffic.
  • Build vs. buy for infrastructure plumbing: Response caching is undifferentiated plumbing. The package only makes sense as a "buy" (i.e., adopt) if it removes meaningful engineering time; otherwise the recommendation is to implement a thin cache decorator yourself and keep full control.
  • Roadmap timing / upgrade budget: The 2.0.0 release is a major version bump, which by convention signals breaking changes. That translates into a migration task on the roadmap — version pinning, upgrade testing, and a rollback plan — not a drop-in improvement. The release notes for 2.0.0 contain only a changelog diff link and no described features, fixes, or deprecations, so scope of breakage is unknown and must be established by engineering before any commitment.
  • Ecosystem fit risk (decision-grade caveat): The package name ends in -bundle, the convention for Symfony bundles, and the vendor (tourze) publishes Symfony-oriented packages. For a Laravel codebase this is likely a framework mismatch: no service provider, no Laravel cache-store integration, and no config publishing out of the box. The realistic PM decision is often "do not adopt; evaluate a Laravel-native alternative or 30–80 lines of custom middleware."
  • Use cases where it could be justified: existing Symfony services in a polyglot estate, a JSON-RPC gateway already standardized on this vendor's stack, or a short-lived internal tool where speed of delivery beats long-term maintainability.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only when all of the following hold:

  • Your application is Symfony-based, or you have a mixed estate where this bundle runs inside a Symfony service rather than the Laravel app.
  • You serve JSON-RPC (not REST/GraphQL) and have measured that identical repeated requests are a real cost — cache-hit potential is proven, not assumed.
  • Cache invalidation semantics are acceptable for your domain: RPC responses are frequently user- or permission-scoped, so a naive shared cache is a data-leak risk. You need a clear answer on cache keys including auth context.
  • Engineering has reviewed the 2.0.0 diff and can quantify the migration effort from 1.x (or confirm a greenfield install).
  • The dependency is small enough to vendor/fork if abandoned — check release cadence, test coverage, and open-issue responsiveness before betting a roadmap item on it.

Look elsewhere (or build in-house) when:

  • Your stack is Laravel and you'd be the first to bridge a Symfony bundle into it — the integration glue will cost more than the caching logic.
  • You need documented behavior: 2.0.0 ships no human-readable changelog, only a commit-range link. A major version with undisclosed breaking changes is a governance red flag for anything customer-facing.
  • Caching is security-sensitive: responses vary by user, tenant, or permission; you need auditable, first-class key and TTL control rather than inherited defaults.
  • Traffic doesn't justify it, or you already have HTTP/CDN/Redis caching at a layer above the application.
  • Vendor concentration is already a concern — adopting yet another single-maintainer package for non-core plumbing raises long-term maintenance cost.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: A dependency we were tracking published a major version (2.0.0). The release notes don't describe what changed — only a link to the commit diff — so there is no new capability to announce and no reason to accelerate adoption. My recommendation is status quo: do not add this to the roadmap. The package is a Symfony-oriented caching bundle for JSON-RPC APIs; our platform is Laravel and REST/JSON, so the fit is poor and integration cost would exceed the value. No budget or headcount impact. If we later expose JSON-RPC endpoints at scale, we'll revisit with a build-vs-buy comparison against a Laravel-native option.

To engineering: Treat 2.0.0 as a breaking release until proven otherwise. Before we consider it, please (1) skim the 1.0.0...2.0.0 diff and summarize user-facing changes, (2) confirm whether this is genuinely usable outside Symfony, and (3) sanity-check the cache-key model for auth/tenant scoping — a mis-scoped key here is a data-exposure bug, not a performance bug. My default position is that a small in-house cache decorator on our RPC/client layer gives us better control, testability, and no framework-mismatch tax. If you disagree, bring a one-page estimate of the integration and the cache-hit assumption you'd validate first.
