Laravel Agora Laravel Package

tomatophp/laravel-agora

Integrate Agora real-time voice and video into your Laravel app with ready-made helpers for channel and token generation, configuration management, and quick setup so you can add live audio and video features without writing boilerplate.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature, not vendor, feasibility for real-time voice/video. This package prices the integration half of “should we add live audio rooms, video calls, telehealth consults, or live commerce?” — not the strategic half. Agora vs. LiveKit vs. Daily vs. Twilio (cost per minute, latency, regional coverage, SDK quality) remains a separate decision. What you get here is a cheap, concrete prototype so that conversation happens against real data instead of a vendor deck.
  • Effort estimation and roadmap sequencing. Token minting is the hidden long pole in every Agora feature. A config-driven service class collapses the authentication half of the estimate from roughly a week of reading Agora’s AccessToken2 documentation to about an afternoon — frequently the difference between a next-quarter commitment and a next-sprint spike.
  • Forcing the identity and permissions model early. Issuing a token forces answers that outlive any package: who joins which channel, as publisher or audience, for how long, and who can revoke a moderator. Deciding this before launch is cheap; retrofitting a tenant/channel authorization model afterward is not.
  • Pricing and entitlement experimentation. Token TTL and privilege expiry are directly monetizable levers — 40-minute free sessions vs. all-day paid webinars, audience-only seats vs. publisher seats, host/co-host tiers. Because TTL is configuration rather than a code change, product can test these with real users without a deploy.
  • Build vs. buy on the wrapper itself. With 10 stars, 0 dependents, and a single maintainer, this repo is evidence of feasibility, not market validation. “Adopt the dependency,” “fork the ~150 lines and own them,” and “write it in-house against the official Agora library” are all legitimate outputs of this assessment. The product-relevant point is that none of them are expensive, so the decision should turn on maintenance ownership and security review, not on capability.
  • A decision gate rather than a commitment. It supports a two-day spike with explicit exit criteria — a defined TTL policy, a server-side role/channel authorization model, a certificate rotation runbook, and one verified real join from every client platform we ship — followed by a go/no-go on Agora itself.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt (or, more likely, fork) when:

  • You are on Laravel 10/11+ and PHP 8+, already committed to Agora RTC, and need only server-side token generation.
  • You want .env-driven App ID / App Certificate configuration and an injectable service, rather than hand-rolling HMAC token construction in a controller.
  • You are building an MVP, internal tool, or time-boxed spike where speed beats dependency hygiene and token volume is low.
  • Your team is prepared to treat it as source code you adopt, not a vendor you depend on: fork under MIT, pin the commit, add tests for expiry and role bits, and name an internal owner.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need more than tokens. Agora Chat/RTM, Cloud Recording, Media Push, REST wrappers, and webhook handling are all absent. This is a single-responsibility package by design.
  • Security or compliance review requires a maintained dependency with an SLA, CVE process, or responsive maintainer. A credential-signing path with one maintainer and zero dependents will fail most supply-chain reviews — rightly so.
  • You need multi-tenant App ID/certificate isolation, certificate rotation automation, wildcard channels, or fine-grained privilege expiry the wrapper may not expose.
  • You already run a token service against Agora’s official PHP library, or you need token v2 guarantees the package may not track. If the AccessToken builder is vendored rather than a Composer dependency on Agora’s official library, you have inherited a snapshot and must watch schema changes yourself.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, MIT-licensed Laravel wrapper that handles one narrow but blocking piece of any live audio/video feature — server-side token generation. It does not choose our vendor and it does not render video; it de-risks our side of the integration so we can run a cheap, time-boxed experiment and make the real Agora-vs-alternatives call with evidence. Because the whole thing is a few hundred lines, the exposure is low: we can adopt it, fork it, or replace it internally without changing our product plan or our client code.

To engineering: Treat it as adopted source, not a supported dependency. Put it behind an application-owned AgoraTokenIssuer contract so the vendor name appears in exactly one file; derive channel names, roles, and UIDs server-side rather than trusting the client; treat TTL and role as product configuration; never log tokens; and add the two tests the package ships without — a deterministic expiry test and a decoded-privilege test. Assume the same two operational failure modes that dominate every Agora integration: a rotated App Certificate looks exactly like a client bug, and token renewal mid-session is the code path nobody exercises until a long call drops. Budget for both in staging before launch, and name an internal owner for the forked code.
