Filament Workflows Laravel Package

tomatophp/filament-workflows

Filament Workflows brings visual workflow automation to Filament panels. Build triggers, conditions, approvals, and actions, connect Laravel models and notifications, and manage runs from a clean admin UI. Automate business processes without leaving your Filament app.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit: Filament 5 plugin for admin-driven workflow automation: Eloquent model events, application events, and webhooks trigger configured actions, with a Workflow Log row per run. Good fit for back-office automation inside a Filament admin panel; not a general-purpose integration/ETL engine. Coupling to Filament UI and Laravel events is intentional but narrows reuse outside that stack.

Integration feasibility: Greenfield Filament 5 apps on Laravel 12/13 and PHP 8.2+ should integrate cleanly via Composer. Requires tomatophp/filament-icons 5, adding another major-version dependency. The v5 release is a major platform jump; the previous code stays on the v3 branch. Teams on older Filament/Laravel versions face a deliberate migration, not a minor upgrade. The InteractsWithWorkflow pre-migration safety and factories/Pest/PHPStan/CI matrix are positive indicators.

Technical risk: Moderate-to-high for upgrades, moderate for greenfield. Main risks: major-version dependency lockstep with Filament 5 and Laravel 12/13; unclear upgrade path from prior versions, with only v3 called out as retained; action execution semantics where failures are logged and remaining actions continue, which implies partial success without rollback, retry, or idempotency guarantees in the notes; all active workflows running per trigger can create fan-out and duplicate/conflicting actions; webhook security is improved but relies on a single environment token, accepts GET, and throttling behavior/config is unspecified. Trigger conditions are limited to single-record plus where/is/value filtering, so complex conditions need custom patterns.

Key questions:

  • What is the supported upgrade path from v4/v3 to v5, and is v3 security-maintained or end-of-life?
  • Are actions executed synchronously or queued? Are retries, idempotency keys, transactions, and concurrency locks supported?
  • What guarantees prevent duplicate or conflicting actions when many active workflows match one event?
  • How are failed actions surfaced operationally—only in Workflow Log, or via alerts/metrics?
  • What are the webhook token rotation, replay protection, GET side-effect, and throttle-limit details?
  • Are workflow definitions, logs, and permissions multi-tenant aware?
  • What PHPStan level, test coverage, and Laravel 13 readiness level does the package actually publish?
  • How stable is the Services\Abstracts\Action contract across minor releases?
  • What is the log retention and cleanup story for high-volume model events?

Integration Approach

Stack fit: Best fit is Laravel 12/13 + Filament 5 + PHP 8.2+ with tomatophp/filament-icons 5. Strong for teams already standardizing on Filament admin panels and wanting in-admin workflow configuration. Poor fit for non-Filament apps, older Laravel/Filament estates, or use cases needing guaranteed exactly-once execution without additional infrastructure.

Migration path: Treat v5 as a platform upgrade, not a package bump. Because previous code remains on v3, confirm whether any v4 path exists and plan a branch/tag audit before committing. Upgrade PHP, Laravel, Filament, and filament-icons first; then install v5 and rebuild/validate workflow builder pages. Audit custom action classes to ensure they extend Services\Abstracts\Action, and test trigger conditions and webhook configuration. For greenfield, install v5 directly but set FILAMENT_WORKFLOWS_WEBHOOK_TOKEN before exposing endpoints.

Compatibility: Composer constraints must align on PHP 8.2+, Laravel 12/13, Filament 5, and icons 5. Laravel 13 support should be verified against your organization’s actual Laravel 13 readiness and ecosystem packages. Existing custom actions not extending the expected abstract class will not run. The pre-migration-safe trait helps deploy ordering but should not replace migration gating in CI/CD. Validate Filament 5 plugin compatibility across the admin panel, not just the workflow package.

Sequencing:

  1. Inventory current Laravel/Filament/PHP versions, workflow definitions, custom actions, and webhook consumers.
  2. Decide greenfield v5 vs upgrade; for upgrade, freeze workflow changes and upgrade platform dependencies in staging first.
  3. Install v5 and filament-icons 5; run migrations and verify InteractsWithWorkflow behavior before and after migration.
  4. Validate action registration via FilamentWorkflows::action([...]) and confirm all custom actions extend the required abstract class.
  5. Configure webhook token, throttling, and log-redaction checks in staging; test GET/POST behavior and closed-endpoint behavior when token is unset.
  6. Run Pest/PHPStan/CI equivalents and add integration tests for model, event, and webhook triggers.
  7. Canary on low-risk models, observe Workflow Log output and failure handling, then expand.

Operational Impact

Maintenance: Expect recurring upgrade work in lockstep with Filament and Laravel majors. The v5 release rebuilds the builder page for Filament 5, so UI regression testing is required. The retained v3 branch suggests older deployments are stranded unless maintainers backport fixes. The added factories, Pest suite, PHPStan, and CI matrix reduce maintenance risk but do not eliminate dependency churn.

Support: Package-level support model is unclear. Plan for an internal owner for workflow definitions, custom action classes, webhook token rotation, and failure triage. Confirm whether v3 receives security fixes and for how long. Without vendor SLA, production use should include internal runbooks and monitoring rather than relying on maintainer responsiveness.

Scaling: Each matching trigger runs attached actions for every active workflow and writes a Workflow Log row per run. At high event volume this increases request latency if synchronous, and adds write volume to the workflow log table. Confirm queueing, batching, concurrency controls, and retention. Webhook throttling helps protect the endpoint, but a single shared token and GET acceptance require careful exposure review. Load-test model-event fan-out before using on high-traffic models.

Failure modes: A failing action is logged and other actions continue, producing partial workflow completion without rollback unless the application adds compensation. Missing retry/dead-letter semantics can leave silent data gaps. Webhook is fail-closed until the token is set, which is secure but can disable integrations on misconfigured deploys. All-active-workflow fan-out can cause duplicate or conflicting actions. Misconfigured throttling can block legitimate traffic. Builder page reconstruction may introduce admin UI regressions.

Ramp-up: Moderate. Filament developers can adopt the builder and trigger conditions quickly, but custom actions require PHP class development and understanding of the abstract action contract. Admins need training on workflow activation, conditions, and log interpretation. Operations needs runbooks for token rotation, throttling, failed-action triage, and log retention. Teams upgrading from v3 should budget a full platform-upgrade cycle plus canary validation, not a same-day package swap.
