Locale Bundle Laravel Package

ticketpark/locale-bundle

A Symfony bundle for managing application locales, tying request locale detection, routing, and translation together so your app can serve the right language to each user with minimal configuration.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Localization architecture — build vs. buy vs. borrow. This bundle is not a viable dependency, but it is a useful design reference for the narrow question every localized product eventually faces: do translatable strings live in per-locale rows, a JSON/array column, or a separate translation table? Reading how this bundle modeled localized strings (entity-backed localized values tied to a locale context) gives the team a third data point alongside the modern Laravel options before committing to a schema.
  • Content model decisions for CMS/marketing/catalog surfaces. If the roadmap includes user-editable or admin-editable strings that must render in N locales, this package's scope — "simplify handling of localized strings" without a full translation-workflow, TMS integration, or fallback chain — is a reminder to scope the product requirement separately from the storage requirement. Fallback behavior, pluralization, and locale negotiation are product decisions, not library features, and this package does not make them for you.
  • Roadmap and deprecation planning. Archived since roughly 2017, zero stars, zero dependents, no releases in ~8 years. If any inherited Symfony codebase lists this as a dependency (it is a Symfony bundle, not a Laravel package), that is a known tech-debt line item to schedule for replacement — and a signal to audit the rest of that app's dependency graph for similarly abandoned i18n components.
  • Hiring and stack-consistency decisions. It surfaces a real org question: are we a Laravel shop or do we carry Symfony-legacy services? The answer changes which localization libraries we standardize on and what we interview for.
  • Not a feature-enablement decision. There is no scenario where adopting this package unlocks a user-facing capability you could not ship otherwise. It should not appear on a roadmap as an enabler.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only in these narrow cases:

  • You are maintaining a legacy Symfony 2.x/3.x application that already depends on it, and you need to understand its behavior before a migration. In that case it is an archaeology exercise, not an evaluation.
  • You need a compact reference implementation of localized-string persistence for a design spike, and you want to compare three or four approaches before writing your own.
  • The scope is genuinely tiny — a handful of localized fields, one or two locales, no editorial workflow — and you are already inside the Symfony ecosystem it targets.

Look elsewhere, decisively, when:

  • Your stack is Laravel. This is a Symfony bundle; it will not install or function in a Laravel app. The relevant comparisons are spatie/laravel-translatable and astrotomic/laravel-translatable, both actively maintained.
  • You are on modern Symfony. Use symfony/translation plus a maintained Doctrine translatable solution (e.g. gedmo/doctrine-extensions Translatable, knplabs/doctrine-behaviors, or a2lix/translation-form-bundle for the admin surface).
  • Any of these are true: you need security patches, PHP 8.x compatibility, a supported release cadence, or an SLA. All fail here.
  • You need pluralization, ICU message format, fallback chains, RTL, or TMS integration. Out of scope for this package.
  • You require community support. Zero stars and zero dependents means no Stack Overflow corpus, no third-party tutorials, and effectively no one to ask.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives (one paragraph): We evaluated ticketpark/locale-bundle as a candidate for handling translated content. It is not a candidate for adoption: it is an archived Symfony bundle with no release since 2017, no community adoption, and no maintenance path. Adopting it would create an unpatched dependency in a customer-facing area with no upgrade route. The value of the evaluation is that it clarified our localization data-model options and prompted us to standardize on maintained libraries — a small cost now that avoids a forced migration later. Recommendation: do not adopt; use as a design reference only; if any existing service depends on it, add a replacement ticket to the backlog.

To engineering: Treat this as source material, not a dependency. Read the localized-string model, note what it deliberately leaves out (fallback resolution, pluralization, locale negotiation, editorial workflow), and bring that gap list to the schema design discussion — those gaps are where our requirements will actually live. Standardize on spatie/laravel-translatable (Laravel) or symfony/translation + Gedmo/A2lix (Symfony) depending on which stack we are committing to, and record that choice in an ADR. Flag any inherited service that lists this bundle so we can scope the replacement work rather than discovering it during a PHP upgrade.
