Getting Started

  • Install and pin in one step. 1.0.0 is the first semver-stable tag, so replace any dev-main/^0.x constraint with a caret on the stable line and commit composer.lock in the same PR. This is the moment your dependency stops moving under you.
  • The changelog is empty. The release notes are a bare version string, so the release itself is not the specification — the code is. Before adopting, run composer require vendor/package:^1.0 and immediately diff the tag against the last 0.x release you were on (git diff <last-0.x-tag>..1.0.0 -- src/ config/). That diff is the changelog.
  • Look first at three files, in this order: the package ServiceProvider (what is bound into the container, what is deferred), the published config file (the knobs you will actually tune), and the README's quickstart (the blessed happy path). Anything not in one of those three places is probably an internal.
  • Publish config before writing any code. php artisan vendor:publish --provider="Vendor\Package\PackageServiceProvider" (or the tag variant if one is registered). Editing the vendor copy is the single most common way teams lose a day of work on the next composer update.
  • First use case to wire up: take the package's smallest end-to-end path — one config entry, one call site, one observable effect (a row written, a request made, a response shaped) — and get it working in a single test before spreading it across the codebase. If you cannot isolate that path, you do not yet understand the integration surface.

Implementation Patterns

  • Wrap the package behind your own boundary. Even a stable 1.0 deserves one small adapter class or interface in your app that the rest of the codebase calls. It costs an hour now and turns a future major-version bump into a single-file change instead of a grep-and-replace.
  • Bind config in config/ per environment, not in code. Anything the package reads from config should be env()-driven in your config file and referenced nowhere else. This keeps staging/production divergence out of application logic.
  • Prefer the package's container bindings over static calls. Resolve through the container (or inject the interface) so tests can swap in fakes and so you inherit any deferred-provider laziness the package author has set up.
  • Test against the package, not around it. Use its published config with in-memory or SQLite equivalents, and assert on the observable effect rather than on internal method calls. Tests that mock the package's internals break on every minor release; tests that assert behaviour survive majors.
  • For queue/HTTP work, register the package's job or client in your own service layer and let your retry, timeout, and backoff policy live in your config. Do not rely on defaults you have not read.
  • Upgrade workflow for the next release: bump the constraint, run the full suite, then read git log --oneline <old>..<new> — with a project that ships terse changelogs, the commit history is the release notes. Automate the bump behind CI so a red pipeline is the signal, not a manual smoke test.

Gotchas and Tips

  • 1.0.0 does not mean "no breaking changes ever again" — it means breaking changes now get a major number. The riskiest release in a package's life is often the 1.0 itself, because 0.x authors frequently use the stabilization moment to lock in renames they have been deferring. Audit the diff; do not assume a version-number bump implies a no-op.
  • Watch for silent config drift. If the package added, renamed, or removed a config key in 1.0, your published (stale) config will not show it. Re-publish to a temp path and diff against yours: php artisan vendor:publish --force into a scratch checkout, or copy the vendor config and diff it.
  • Cached config is the usual suspect. After any install or upgrade: php artisan config:clear && php artisan cache:clear && composer dump-autoload. Half of all "the package is ignoring my settings" reports end here.
  • Laravel version and PHP constraints. Check the composer.json of the 1.0 tag explicitly — a stable release frequently drops the oldest supported Laravel and PHP versions. If your app is on the previous LTS, the constraint will tell you before the runtime does.
  • Extension points beat forks. If you need behaviour the package does not expose, look first for a published interface, an event, a macroable trait, or a config-driven strategy before subclassing internals. Internals are the part most likely to move in 1.x.
  • Debug with the container and the query log, not with dd() in vendor code. app()->bound(...) to confirm registration, DB::listen() / Telescope for side effects, and the package's own log channel if it registers one. Vendor edits vanish on the next composer install and take your debugging evidence with them.
  • Record what you learned. Since upstream shipped no notes, write a short internal docs/package.md capturing the version you adopted, the config keys you changed, and the diff highlights. The next person to bump this dependency will thank you — and it substitutes for the changelog the maintainer did not write.
