Product Decisions This Supports
- Marketplace payments go/no-go: This package only exists to wire the MangoPay PHP SDK into a Symfony service container — so the real product decision it informs is whether to buy regulated marketplace payments (wallets, escrow, KYC/onboarding, seller payouts, refunds/disputes) rather than building a ledger and compliance program in-house. The bundle itself is glue, not capability.
- Build vs. buy vs. wrap: It's a data point for "buy the PSP, own the integration." Even the buy-side integration surface here is thin enough (~50–100 lines of DI config and service definitions) that it should never be a deciding factor; the MangoPay contract and commercial terms are.
- Use cases it enables: seller onboarding with identity verification, split payments and delayed payouts, escrow-style release-on-fulfilment, refund/chargeback workflows — all core to two-sided marketplace roadmaps.
- Stack-fit decision, and a negative one: Despite the framing, this is Symfony-only, not Laravel. It cannot serve a Laravel roadmap, and it targets Symfony 2.7+ through roughly the 3.x/4.x era — not a modern Symfony 6/7 or PHP 8 baseline. So it also can't support a framework-upgrade roadmap.
- Maintenance-cost roadmap input: Archived, unmaintained, last release July 2019, 2 stars, 0 dependents. Any adoption is an immediate "plan the exit" line item, which is a roadmap cost, not a roadmap enabler.
When to Consider This Package
Consider only if all of the following hold:
- You are on a legacy Symfony (2.7/3.x-era) application that cannot move frameworks quickly.
- MangoPay is already the chosen, contracted payment provider.
- You need DI wiring and configuration management for the SDK and want to avoid writing it.
- You accept pinning a dependency with no upstream security or bug fixes.
Look elsewhere — or skip the wrapper entirely — if:
- You're on Laravel, or any non-Symfony stack. Hard mismatch; there is no version of this that fits.
- You're greenfield or on Symfony 5/6/7 and PHP 8+. Use the MangoPay PHP SDK directly; the wiring is trivial and avoids an abandoned dependency in a payments path.
- You need webhook handling, idempotency, retries, reconciliation, or audit logging. This package doesn't provide those, and a payments integration without them is not production-ready regardless of language.
- You require vendor support, SLAs, or any assurance on a security-sensitive code path.
- You're assessing risk formally: archived status plus zero dependents means no community backstop. Fork-and-vendor is the honest option if you truly need it, and Teknoo's own README invites contacting them for a maintained version — that's the only credible support path.
How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)
For executives: This is not a strategic asset and should not appear in any build-vs-buy deck. The bundle is a small convenience wrapper around MangoPay's SDK; the actual value — regulated payment handling, seller onboarding, KYC, escrow and payouts — lives in MangoPay, and that commercial decision stands entirely on its own. The package is archived, unmaintained since 2019, and has no adopter base. Adopting it is a small, reversible engineering convenience with a known expiry date, not a platform bet.
For engineering: Extremely small surface area — mostly service definitions and configuration. It is Symfony-only and predates modern Symfony/PHP, so it is not applicable to a Laravel service or a current Symfony build. Recommended posture: treat it as a reference implementation to read, not a dependency to install. If a legacy service must use it, pin the version, isolate it behind an internal payment gateway interface, and budget roughly one to two days to replace it with direct SDK calls. Do not let it sit on the critical payment path unmapped.
Bottom line: Say no by default. Say yes only inside a legacy Symfony app already committed to MangoPay, and only with a documented exit.
