Theme Laravel Package

teepluss/theme

Laravel theme management package for organizing Blade views, layouts, partials, and assets into switchable themes. Activate themes at runtime, resolve theme-specific templates, and keep multi-theme applications modular without duplicating view logic.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • White-label / multi-tenant branding. If the roadmap includes letting customers or resellers supply their own branding, this package defines the shape of that feature: a self-contained theme directory holding views, layouts, partials, translations, and assets, resolved at runtime. That is the exact abstraction a "custom branding" tier needs, and it is the piece most teams underestimate when estimating.
  • Build vs. buy for the theming layer. Theming is a classic "undifferentiated heavy lifting" candidate — everyone needs view resolution, asset publishing, fallback chains, and cache-busting, and nobody wins a market by writing it themselves. This package is a reference implementation to price the build option against.
  • Campaign and seasonal surface area. Marketing often needs landing pages or seasonal skins shipped without a full deploy cycle. A theme directory with its own routes/views contract turns those asks into content work rather than engineering work — a direct lever on marketing velocity.
  • Partner/OEM distribution. If the product is ever sold to partners who host it themselves, theme isolation is what keeps their customizations from forking the core codebase and stranding the upgrade path.
  • Roadmap sequencing signal. The package's low dependents count and age are a useful data point for the "extend Laravel conventions" vs. "adopt community plugins" debate. It argues for a thin internal theme contract that you own, with the package studied as prior art rather than a runtime dependency.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when all of the following hold:

  • The application is on an older Laravel line (roughly 5.x era) that still matches the package's support matrix — verify against the repository's composer.json and recent commit activity before scoping anything.
  • Theming is a differentiator or contractual requirement, not a nice-to-have; the cost of a bespoke implementation is real and recurring.
  • You can accept vendor risk: the package is a single-maintainer, MIT-licensed project with effectively no downstream dependents, meaning no community pressure to keep it current and no ecosystem of fixes.
  • Your team is comfortable forking and maintaining the code — realistically, treat this as a starting codebase you own, not a dependency you consume.
  • The theme boundary can stay server-rendered and view-centric; the package's value is in organizing Blade views, partials, and assets, not in modern SPA or API-first delivery.

Look elsewhere (build a thin in-house resolver, or use Laravel's native view namespaces plus a config-driven theme switch) when:

  • The project is on Laravel 9/10/11+ or has a near-term major upgrade on the roadmap. A stale package becomes a blocker on the exact upgrade that keeps you secure.
  • You need first-class asset tooling (Vite, per-tenant asset CDN, cache-busting at scale). The package predates the modern asset pipeline and will need rework.
  • Security review flags runtime theme selection from user input — theme names touching the filesystem demand path validation you will have to add yourself.
  • Theming is a one-off (single brand) rather than a platform capability. Overhead without payoff.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: Theming is a revenue-adjacent capability — it underpins white-label tiers, partner resale, and campaign velocity. This package demonstrates the capability is structurally simple (a directory convention plus a resolver), which de-risks the estimate: we are not inventing anything novel, we are choosing between adopting ~500 lines of proven pattern or writing our own. It is MIT-licensed with no per-seat or per-domain cost, so the business case rests entirely on time-to-market, not licensing.

The honest caveat, stated plainly: this is a 541-star, single-maintainer project with zero dependents and no active release cadence. For a new build we should recommend it as a reference design and optional fork, not a composer require we depend on. The recommendation to leadership is a small internal theme layer (~1–2 weeks) informed by this package's structure, which we fully control and can carry across Laravel upgrades. If timelines are tight and the stack is legacy-compatible, adopting and vendoring it is defensible — but budget for ownership, not support.

To engineering: the package's real gift is a settled contract — themes as self-contained directories with views, layouts, partials, translations, and publishable assets, plus a fallback chain and activation mechanism. We should copy the contract and discard the coupling: keep theme resolution behind an interface, validate theme identifiers before any filesystem access, and wire assets through Vite rather than the package's legacy publish step. That gives product the same feature surface with an upgrade path that does not expire.
