Tc Lib Pdf Page Laravel Package

tecnickcom/tc-lib-pdf-page

Manages page sizes, orientation, and box definitions (MediaBox, CropBox, TrimBox) for PDF documents. Part of the tc-lib-pdf/TCPDF ecosystem, it provides deterministic page geometry and unit conversion helpers for multi-page layouts.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for PDF generation. This package scopes the "page geometry" layer of a PDF pipeline — standard/custom page sizes, orientation, unit conversion, and box definitions (CropBox, TrimBox, etc.). It helps answer whether we build document output in-house on a low-level PHP stack or buy a higher-level service (DocRaptor, PDFTron) or wrapper (DomPDF, mPDF).
  • Feature scoping for print-aware output. If the roadmap includes print-ready artifacts — bleed/trim/crop boxes, mixed-orientation documents, custom label or packaging sizes, compliance-bound layouts — this component covers that surface so we don't hand-roll geometry math.
  • Architecture and separation of concerns. It is a deliberate building block, not an application library. Adopting it implies a decision to separate page geometry from rendering and composition, which is useful for testability and for swapping renderers later.
  • Use-case fit. Strongest for: invoices and statements with mixed page orientation, reports with custom page sizes, print/packaging labels, and any document where box metadata matters to downstream print workflows.
  • Vendor and dependency risk assessment. Low stars (7) and zero declared dependents look alarming in isolation, but this is a subcomponent of the TCPDF ecosystem (100M+ installs claimed). The real decision is about the parent stack, not this module.
  • Licensing review trigger. README states LGPL v3 while package metadata reports NOASSERTION. That discrepancy alone warrants a legal check before it enters a distributed product.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You have already committed to (or are seriously evaluating) the tc-lib-pdf / TCPDF ecosystem; this module is a cog in that machine, not a standalone win.
  • You need deterministic, low-level control over page geometry — custom media sizes, per-page orientation, crop/trim/bleed metadata — and don't want to reimplement it.
  • Your platform is PHP 8.2+ with zlib, uses Composer, and your team is comfortable reading source and typing exceptions rather than relying on tutorials.
  • You can pin a version, wrap it behind an internal interface, and absorb maintenance (including patching or vendoring if needed).
  • You are comfortable with LGPL v3 obligations after legal review.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need HTML/CSS-to-PDF rendering — this package does not render; it only models page structure. Reach for a higher-level tool.
  • You need commercial support, SLAs, or a broad community — this is a single-maintainer project with minimal standalone adoption and thin documentation (maturity rated "readme").
  • You require a permissive license (MIT/Apache) without copyleft review.
  • You need battle-tested, widely deployed behavior at this layer — zero listed dependents means you're relying on the parent ecosystem's testing, not independent adoption.
  • You are not using the TCPDF stack — the constructor already couples you to Com\Tecnick\Color and Com\Tecnick\Pdf\Encrypt, so standalone use drags in sibling dependencies.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, free, focused component from the maintainers of TCPDF, a PDF library with a very large installed base. It lets us support print-aware documents — custom page sizes, mixed orientation, crop/trim boxes — without building geometry logic ourselves, which shortens time-to-market for print and label features. The trade-offs are real but manageable: it's maintained by essentially one person, has almost no independent adoption, and its license metadata needs a legal check before we ship it in a distributed product. Recommendation: pilot it inside one non-critical document feature, pin the version, and keep it behind our own abstraction so we can replace it if maintenance stalls.

To engineering: Clean namespaced PHP 8.2 library, Composer-installable, typed exceptions for invalid layout parameters, API docs and CI with coverage. It is a geometry/model layer only — you still need a renderer and composer above it. Expect to read source rather than docs. Wrap it: don't let Com\Tecnick\Pdf\Page types leak across our codebase, and budget a small amount of time for upgrades and potential patching. If we're not already on tc-lib-pdf, adopting this alone is not worth the sibling dependencies.
