Product Decisions This Supports
- Platform re-baselining (the headline). v5.0.0 replaces the Laravel core with Slim 3. Any roadmap item that assumed Laravel primitives — Eloquent, service providers, Blade, Laravel auth scaffolding — must be re-scoped or dropped. Treat this as a platform decision, not a feature release.
- Build vs. buy recalculation. The release re-implements authentication, sessions, CSRF, middleware, and Phinx migrations — capabilities Laravel provided for free. The buy case shifts from "convenience wrapper" to "we now own a mini-framework's operational surface and its bug tail."
- Market/vertical fit. The new custom validation rule for Ecuadorian cédula (plus Spanish-language release notes) signals a LatAm/Ecuador-first product line. Use this to decide whether the package becomes a standard for Ecuador-facing products or stays a single-project dependency.
- Front-end delivery path. TailwindCSS + PurgeCSS + Laravel Mix 2.0 plus a new base view design gives a supported route to a UI refresh and a defensible page-weight budget. Useful for scoping design-system work.
- Transactional comms. SwiftMailer inclusion supports email requirements, but SwiftMailer is end-of-life — factor deprecation risk into any email-dependent roadmap item rather than assuming a stable foundation.
- Upgrade risk. No migration path from the Laravel-based line is documented. Plan a migration spike and a feature-parity audit before committing any date that depends on v5.
When to Consider This Package
Adopt when:
- You are building or maintaining an Ecuador/LatAm-facing application and want the cédula validation, Spanish UX, and base views out of the box.
- Your team is comfortable with Slim 3 / PSR-7 idioms rather than Laravel conventions — the Laravel surface you relied on is gone at v5.
- The app is small-to-medium and self-contained, where owning auth/session/CSRF plumbing is acceptable overhead.
- The shipped front-end pipeline (Tailwind + PurgeCSS + Mix) matters more to you than framework ecosystem integration.
Look elsewhere when:
- You actually need Laravel — this is no longer a Laravel package. Staying on Laravel means pinning the pre-5.x line (effectively unsupported going forward) or choosing a genuinely Laravel-native alternative.
- You require long-term support: Slim 3 is superseded by Slim 4 and SwiftMailer is EOL, so a brand-new major version ships on two aging foundations.
- You need enterprise auth (SSO/SAML/MFA), queue-heavy mail, or mature migration tooling — a "basic authentication module" and Phinx are a starting point, not a platform.
- You depend on ecosystem depth (Eloquent packages, Horizon, Nova, vendor advisories tied to Laravel releases).
- You cannot absorb a framework migration this cycle; defer until a written upgrade guide exists.
How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)
Executives: v5.0.0 is a re-platforming, not a feature upgrade — the package moved off Laravel onto Slim 3. It delivers our Ecuador-specific validation, a modernized Tailwind front end, and a basic auth/session/CSRF stack. The upside is a lighter, vertically tailored starting point; the cost is that we now own plumbing Laravel used to supply, and two foundations (Slim 3, SwiftMailer) are already superseded. Recommendation: do not treat this as a drop-in upgrade — fund a short parity and migration spike, and confirm the target market before committing roadmap dates.
Engineering: New core on Slim 3 with Tailwind, PurgeCSS, and Mix 2.0; new base views; a custom cédula validation rule; Phinx migrations; SwiftMailer; plus middleware, CSRF, sessions, flash messaging, and basic auth. Assume breaking changes across routing, ORM, templating, and auth, and note that no upgrade path is documented. Audit the Slim 3 → Slim 4 and SwiftMailer → Symfony Mailer paths early, and budget for replacing framework-provided conventions we previously took for granted. Validate the cédula rule against official Ecuadorian identification rules before production use, and add regression coverage around auth, CSRF, and session behavior since these are new implementations.
