Nova Collapsible Groups Laravel Package

tanmuhittin/nova-collapsible-groups

Laravel Nova package that organizes resource form fields into collapsible groups, turning long, complex forms into tidy sections users can expand and collapse. Configure group labels, default open or closed state, and styling with standard Nova fields—no custom components required.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Admin UX polish vs. deferral. This package addresses a specific, narrow usability gap: long Nova sidebars with many navigation groups become a wall of links. It lets you decide whether reducing sidebar cognitive load is worth work in the current cycle or belongs on the polish backlog.
  • Build vs. buy vs. copy. At ~23 stars, 0 dependents, and a last release in March 2019, this is realistically a reference implementation rather than a dependency. The decision it supports is "vendor the CSS/Blade override ourselves" versus "install the package" versus "wait for upstream Nova."
  • Information architecture decisions. If you're deciding how many navigation groups a large internal admin (10+ resources, multiple domains) should expose, a collapsible group affordance changes the calculus — you can keep hierarchy instead of flattening groups just to keep the sidebar short.
  • Upgrade-path planning. The stale release date makes this a forcing function for the question: which Nova major version are we on, and does the current version already solve this natively? If yes, the roadmap item is "upgrade Nova," not "add package."
  • Scope calibration for internal tools. Useful signal for deciding how much to invest in admin chrome for a tool used by 5 internal ops people versus a customer-facing panel.

When to Consider This Package

Reasonable to consider when:

  • You are pinned to Nova 2.x/3.x and cannot upgrade in the near term.
  • The admin is internal, low-blast-radius, and a broken sidebar costs nothing commercially.
  • You have many navigation groups and confirmed that collapsing them materially helps a real workflow (measured, not assumed).
  • You are willing to fork/pin and own the code — treat it as a snippet, not a maintained dependency.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are on Nova 4+ — verify native sidebar/collapsible navigation behavior first; if it's covered, this package is dead weight.
  • Your org requires maintained dependencies: no release since 2019, zero dependents, and a low package score (1.795) mean no community safety net for breaking Nova changes.
  • You need more than collapsing: nav search, favorites, permission-aware menu visibility, or icon-only mode. This package does one thing and won't grow into that.
  • Anyone outside engineering will review the dependency (security, licensing-at-scale, procurement). MIT is fine, but the maintenance story is not.
  • The gap is cosmetic enough that 20 lines of custom CSS/Nova asset override in your own repo is strictly cheaper than a third-party dependency.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

One line: A small, MIT-licensed Nova add-on that makes sidebar navigation groups collapsible, improving scannability in large admin panels — but it hasn't been updated since 2019 and has effectively no user base, so we should treat it as a pattern to borrow rather than a dependency to adopt.

For executives: This is a low-cost UX improvement for internal admin tooling, not a product differentiator. The expected benefit is faster navigation for staff who live in the admin daily. The expected cost is near zero if we copy the approach into our own code; the risk is non-trivial if we install it, because an unmaintained package can silently break on the next Nova upgrade. Recommendation: pilot only if the pain is real and measurable, otherwise defer.

For engineering: Single-purpose blade/CSS override for Nova's core navigation. Last release predates current Nova majors, zero dependents, so no upstream fixes will arrive. Preferred path: verify whether our Nova version already supports collapsed groups; if not, fork the logic into our own nova-components or asset override, pin it, and add a test or screenshot check so a Nova upgrade surfaces regressions. Do not add it to composer.json as an unqualified dependency.

Decision requested: Either (a) approve a small spike to measure sidebar navigation friction in the admin, or (b) close this out as superseded and revisit only if Nova upgrades don't solve it.
