Object Translation Bundle Laravel Package

symfonycasts/object-translation-bundle

A lightweight Symfony bundle for translating Doctrine entities and other objects without extra translation tables. Store translations in a JSON column via a simple trait and interface, then read and set locale-aware values directly on your objects.

Technical Evaluation

Framework mismatch — first-order finding. The release notes are for SymfonyCasts/object-translation-bundle, a Symfony bundle, not a Laravel package. It ships a Bundle subclass, a DI extension, Doctrine event subscribers/loaders, and depends on doctrine/doctrine-bundle. It has no Laravel service provider, facade, config publish tag, or Eloquent integration. Before any engineering time is spent, confirm whether the intended target is a Laravel application or a Symfony service inside the estate.

Architecture fit. In a Symfony + Doctrine codebase the fit is excellent: it stores per-locale translations in a JSON column on the entity itself, avoiding a separate translation table and join-heavy hydration. In a Laravel codebase the fit is poor — Laravel's default ORM is Eloquent, and adopting this bundle means adopting Doctrine ORM plus DoctrineBundle plus Symfony's DI kernel conventions. That is a framework-inside-a-framework decision, not a package decision.

What v1.1.0 actually changes. Two dependency-widening PRs and nothing else:

  • doctrine/doctrine-bundle v3 compatibility (constraint widening)
  • Symfony 8 support (constraint widening)
  • Two first-time contributors; no code changes called out in the changelog

There are no new features, no deprecations, and no documented breaking changes. The risk is not in the diff — it is in what the diff implies about the project's maturity and test surface.

Technical risk.

  • Low direct risk: widening a Composer constraint cannot break an existing pinned install.
  • Moderate indirect risk: Symfony 8 support was contributed by an outside contributor in a one-line-style PR. Unless the CI matrix was extended in the same change, "allowed by Composer" may not equal "tested against Symfony 8." Verify the workflow matrix before trusting the constraint.
  • doctrine-bundle v3 carries its own configuration and deprecation surface (config tree changes, removal of long-deprecated options). Widening to v3 means consumers on v3 inherit whatever those changes are; the bundle itself claims no adaptation work was needed, which is plausible given its small footprint but should be spot-checked.
  • Project maturity: v1.0.0 → v1.1.0 with two PRs and two drive-by contributors suggests a low-traffic, likely single-maintainer project. That is a bus-factor and long-term-support risk independent of code quality.

Key questions for the maintainer / for us.

  1. Is our target stack Laravel or Symfony? If Laravel, this is a non-starter without an adapter, and we should be evaluating spatie/laravel-translatable or astrotomic/laravel-translatable instead.
  2. Does CI actually run the Symfony 8 and doctrine-bundle v3 combinations, or were constraints widened without matrix coverage?
  3. What is the BC/support policy for the 1.x line? Is 1.x considered stable API?
  4. What are the minimum PHP and Doctrine ORM versions after this change?
  5. Is there a documented migration note for anyone moving from doctrine-bundle 2 to 3 while using this bundle?
  6. Who is the accountable maintainer, and is there a security disclosure path?

Integration Approach

Stack fit. Requires Symfony (6/7/8 range implied), Doctrine ORM, and doctrine/doctrine-bundle 2 or 3. Laravel does not ship Doctrine by default; the community doctrine/orm integrations for Laravel lag upstream and add their own maintenance burden. Treat this as a Symfony-only dependency unless the framework-mismatch question above is resolved in favor of Symfony.

Migration path (if we proceed).

  1. Do not let Doctrine mapping attributes, Translatable interfaces, or the bundle's locale-resolution semantics leak into domain or application code.
  2. Define a narrow internal port — e.g. TranslationRepository / TranslatableContent — and have the bundle-backed implementation sit behind it.
  3. Keep the JSON-column storage decision out of the public read model so a later swap (to a translation table, or to a Laravel-native package) is a contained change.
  4. If this is genuinely a Laravel target, prototype the Doctrine integration in a throwaway branch first and timebox it. Do not commit to it before the spike proves the container, config, and migration story.

Compatibility.

  • Pin via lockfile; add a CI job that runs composer why-not / composer update --dry-run to surface constraint conflicts early.
  • Confirm the PHP floor introduced by Symfony 8 support (Symfony 8 raises the PHP minimum) does not silently raise our own runtime requirement.
  • Verify doctrine/doctrine-bundle v3 against our existing Doctrine config before widening locally — v3 removes deprecated config keys.

Sequencing.

  1. Resolve the Laravel-vs-Symfony scope question (blocks everything).
  2. Confirm CI matrix coverage for Symfony 8 / doctrine-bundle 3 — ask upstream or read the workflow file.
  3. Run the Doctrine-in-Laravel spike only if step 1 says Laravel; otherwise skip.
  4. Prototype in a scratch Symfony app against v1.1.0; validate translation loading, fallback behavior, and query patterns.
  5. Land behind the internal port with a feature flag; no production traffic until the port is the only call site.
  6. Re-evaluate after one quarter of upstream activity to gauge whether the project is maintained.

Operational Impact

Maintenance. Low upstream traffic plus external drive-by contributions means we should assume we may need to fork or vendor-patch. Budget a small but standing allocation for dependency upkeep — the failure mode is not the bundle breaking, it is doctrine/doctrine-bundle or Symfony moving and this bundle not following promptly.

Support. Community-only. SymfonyCasts is a training company, not a support vendor; there is no SLA, no LTS commitment, and no commercial backstop. Escalation path is GitHub issues.

Scaling. JSON-column translation storage is convenient but has real query consequences:

  • Filtering or sorting on a translated field requires JSON path expressions or generated columns; on large tables this will not use a plain index.
  • Per-locale indexing must be designed deliberately (functional/generated column indexes where the DB supports them).
  • Translation data rides along on the entity row, so row width grows with locale count. Audit this before adding many locales.
  • Watch for N+1 loading of translations in list endpoints; eager-load explicitly.

Failure modes to monitor.

  • Composer constraint conflicts at upgrade time, particularly around doctrine-bundle major versions.
  • Silent behavior differences after a doctrine-bundle 2→3 move (config key removals, default changes).
  • Untested Symfony 8 combinations slipping into a dependency update.
  • Missing-fallback behavior: an untranslated locale rendering empty rather than the default locale — needs an explicit test.
  • Row bloat and slow locale-filtered queries as translation volume grows.

Ramp-up. The bundle's own API surface is small and learnable in days. The real ramp-up cost is Doctrine + Symfony DI fluency for a team that primarily writes Laravel/Eloquent: realistically two to three weeks before a mid-level engineer is productive and confident, plus ongoing friction from switching mental models between Eloquent and the Doctrine Unit of Work.

Recommendation. Do not adopt on the strength of v1.1.0 — the release is dependency housekeeping and carries no functional signal either way. Resolve the framework-scope question first. If the target is Symfony, this is a reasonable, low-ceremony option worth a prototype, contingent on confirming that Symfony 8 and doctrine-bundle 3 are actually in CI. If the target is Laravel, this is the wrong package and the assessment should be redirected to an Eloquent-native translation library.
