Variation Laravel Package

sylius/variation

Sylius Variation is a PHP component that provides reusable domain building blocks for modeling product variations in Sylius-based e-commerce applications, helping organize variation values and related catalog configuration.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Variant/option modeling for catalogue or configuration features. This package is the extracted domain model for "things that vary along option axes" (product variants, plan tiers, configurable SKUs). It is most useful as a reference design for how to structure Option → OptionValue → Variation relationships, not as a runtime dependency.
  • Build vs. buy for variant logic. When your roadmap includes configurable products, bundles, or matrix-based pricing, this gives your team a battle-tested schema shape to benchmark an in-house model against — a concrete starting point for estimation and architecture discussions.
  • Ecosystem coupling decision. If you are evaluating Sylius as a commerce backbone, this package is part of the answer to "what does the domain layer actually look like?" It informs whether Sylius' variation semantics match your catalogue model before you commit to the platform.
  • Roadmap scoping for B2B / multi-axis configuration. The abstraction generalizes beyond retail (subscription tiers, resource sizing, feature matrices), so it can be cited when scoping any "N-dimensional variants" feature.
  • Not a decision this supports: adding a new third-party dependency to a production system. See below.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You are already in the Sylius ecosystem and want to understand how variation is modeled in the monorepo — read the source, don't require the split package.
  • You need a domain-model reference for option-driven variants and want to avoid designing the schema from scratch.
  • You are running a spike or architecture review and need a concrete, MIT-licensed example of the aggregate boundaries (Variation, Option, OptionValue) to react to.
  • You want to estimate effort for building in-house variant handling by measuring against a known implementation.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need a maintained dependency. The repository is archived: no bug fixes, no security patches, no framework-version compatibility work. Adopting it as a runtime library transfers full maintenance burden to you.
  • You need proof of production use. Seven stars and zero dependents on the split package means no external validation of it as a standalone unit — all real-world usage is inside the Sylius monolith, where it is versioned and tested as part of a whole.
  • You are not on Sylius. Pulling a single archived subpackage out of a coupled ecosystem is a classic way to inherit transitive assumptions and orphaned code.
  • You need an actively maintained alternative. Prefer the main sylius/sylius repository if you want a supported version, or evaluate your ORM/framework's own modelling primitives if you only need a simple variant table.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (one paragraph): We evaluated sylius/variation, a small MIT-licensed PHP library that models object variations — the pattern behind product variants and configurable offerings. Our recommendation is not to adopt it as a dependency. It is archived, has no downstream dependents as a standalone package, and carries no maintenance or security commitment; taking it on would mean owning it ourselves. Its real value is as a free reference architecture: it shows how a mature e-commerce platform structures variant data, which we can use to de-risk and sharpen the estimate for our own configuration feature. Net cost to us: a few hours of engineering review. Net benefit: a validated data model and a firmer build estimate, with zero new dependency risk.

For engineering: Read it, don't require it. The package encodes a clean Option/OptionValue/Variation separation worth mirroring in our schema. Because it is a read-only split of the Sylius monorepo and is archived, treat the code as documentation — vendor the ideas, not the package. If we later standardize on Sylius, consume variation through the main framework rather than this artifact. Flag any proposal that adds it to composer.json as a dependency-risk item.
