Admin Bundle Laravel Package

sylius/admin-bundle

Sylius AdminBundle delivers the default administration panel for Sylius stores, offering a clean Symfony and Twig interface to manage products, orders, customers, promotions, taxes, and settings. It provides reusable grids, forms, and resource CRUD screens that speed up building custom e-commerce ba...

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Commerce platform build-vs-buy, at the platform level. This bundle is the admin surface of Sylius. Evaluating it is not a decision about a library — it's a decision about whether to adopt Sylius as the commerce core (as a separate Symfony service) alongside the Laravel application. Frame the decision that way in any roadmap review.
  • Internal admin/ops tooling scope. If Sylius admin covers the catalog, order, customer, promotion, pricing, tax, and shipping workflows the ops team actually needs, the bespoke Laravel admin roadmap for those domains shrinks materially. Product can redirect those sprints toward differentiators (pricing logic, merchandising, customer experience) rather than CRUD.
  • Architecture stance: separate service vs. Laravel-native admin. Two realistic paths — (a) run Sylius with its native admin as its own service, integrate with Laravel over API/SSO/events; or (b) keep Laravel as the admin experience and build against Sylius's headless APIs, ignoring this bundle entirely. This decision determines team shape, hiring, and long-term maintenance cost.
  • Customization strategy and upgrade budget. The override-first model (Twig templates, grid/resource YAML, menu and form extension) is cheap per change but accumulates upgrade friction across Sylius majors. Product should expect to allocate a recurring upgrade line item, not a one-time integration cost.
  • Multi-channel / multi-store operations design. Confirms whether a single Sylius admin across channels is sufficient, or whether ops needs channel-specific operator experiences that would push toward a headless/bespoke admin.
  • Stack and hiring implications. Symfony/Twig/Doctrine/Webpack Encore, server-rendered. This is a real input to hiring plans and to whether the current Laravel-only team can own the commerce back office without specialist support.

Two caveats worth noting in any scorecard: the 7 stars / 0 dependents is an artifact of the read-only subtree split — health should be measured against Sylius/Sylius, and the package is explicitly deprecated as standalone because admin functionality now ships in Sylius core. Treat it as "documentation of the Sylius admin layer," not a candidate dependency.

When to Consider This Package

Consider (as a signal to evaluate Sylius, not as a direct dependency) when:

  • The organization is seriously evaluating Sylius on Symfony as a commerce platform. This bundle is what you get as the back office; evaluating it means evaluating Sylius.
  • You need a production-grade back office out of the box — catalog, orders, customers, promotions, pricing, taxes, shipping — and want to avoid building grids, filters, CRUD forms, and admin security from scratch.
  • Your team is Symfony-fluent or willing to become so, and prefers a server-rendered, override-friendly admin (Twig + YAML config) over an SPA.
  • MIT licensing and template/config-level customization matter more than a vendor SLA.
  • You are planning a Sylius version upgrade and need to understand admin-level breaking changes (the admin UI changed materially across major versions) to size migration work.
  • You intend to contribute fixes upstream — knowing PRs go to Sylius/Sylius, not this repo.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are a Laravel shop with no Symfony capacity. This is a Symfony bundle, not a Laravel package. It will not natively load its admin UI, DI configuration, routing, security, or asset pipeline into a Laravel app. A partial import is not practical. If staying Laravel-native is a constraint, this is the wrong tool.
  • You need a headless or SPA admin — prefer Sylius's API plus a bespoke React/Vue admin, or API Platform with a custom frontend.
  • Your workflows are deeply domain-specific (complex B2B pricing, manufacturing, WMS) and would require heavy forking — build separate services integrated via APIs.
  • You want a small footprint — Sylius admin pulls in the full Sylius + Symfony stack. EasyAdmin or Sonata on a leaner app fits if you don't need commerce core.
  • You require a hosted vendor with an SLA — Shopify Plus, BigCommerce, or a managed Sylius provider.
  • You need independent semantic versioning of this package — it's a split; releases follow Sylius.
  • You have low tolerance for lifecycle upgrade work in PHP/Symfony.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

Executives. The Sylius admin panel is a production-grade, MIT-licensed back office for products, orders, customers, promotions, and pricing — the operational UI of a commerce platform, not a separate line item. It shortens time-to-first-order and reduces internal admin/tooling spend. The real costs are zero on license and non-trivial on engineering: it requires Symfony/PHP capability and carries an ongoing upgrade line item tied to Sylius release cadence, plus a service boundary between the Laravel application and the Sylius commerce service (API, SSO, events, and data ownership). Note the 7 stars / 0 dependents on this repo are split-repo artifacts — the health signal is the Sylius monorepo and its release history.

Engineering. This is the admin UI layer of Sylius, shipped as a read-only subtree split. All development and PRs happen in Sylius/Sylius — do not fork this repo for contributions, and do not attempt to composer require it into a Laravel app. It assumes Symfony, Twig, Doctrine, Webpack Encore, and is tightly coupled to Sylius ResourceBundle / GridBundle / UiBundle. The customization path is override-first: Twig templates under templates/bundles/SyliusAdminBundle/, grid and resource YAML config, menu and form extension, custom actions. Expect to learn the extension surface (routing, grids, services) before touching structure, and budget for upgrade work at Sylius majors — the admin UI changed materially in 2.0. The package is also marked deprecated as standalone; admin functionality now ships in sylius/sylius core, which reinforces that version alignment matters more than this repo's independent state.

Recommendation. Do not treat this as a standalone adoption decision. Two coherent options:

  1. Adopt Sylius as a separate Symfony commerce service with its native admin, integrated with Laravel via API/SSO/events. Justified when you need a broad, configurable commerce back office under MIT and have or will build internal Symfony capacity.
  2. Go headless or lean admin. If the organization wants to stay Laravel-native, skip this bundle and either build against a headless commerce API with a Laravel/JS admin, or use a lean admin such as EasyAdmin on a custom app. If SLA and low operational burden dominate, evaluate a SaaS commerce platform.

Make the call at the platform level, not on the package. If the deciding criteria are "we want a configurable, override-friendly commerce back office we can own" — choose Sylius. If they are "we want to stay in Laravel and minimize new stack surface" — do not adopt this, and plan a different admin path.
