Product Decisions This Supports
- Build vs. buy for media operations. The existence of this addon reframes the question from "do we build a DAM integration?" to "do we adopt Fairu and take a dependency on a thin connector?" It lets you price the integration work as a Composer install plus configuration rather than a multi-sprint engineering project — useful leverage in budget conversations even if you ultimately build.
- System-of-record decision for brand assets. Choosing this package is effectively a decision that Fairu, not Statamic's native asset container, owns media: rights, expiry, renditions, taxonomy, and approvals live in the DAM, while Statamic owns presentation. That has downstream consequences for editorial workflow, legal/compliance review, and who gets licensed seats.
- Roadmap sequencing for content operations. If media sprawl is a known pain (duplicate uploads, inconsistent crops, expired assets going live), this addon is a low-cost way to validate the DAM-CMS pattern on one site before committing to a program-wide rollout across brands, locales, or additional CMS instances.
- Ecosystem risk assessment. Zero stars, zero dependents, and a low overall score mean this is an unproven connector. That is a genuine input to the "is the Statamic + Fairu stack viable for us?" decision — the gap it fills appears real (the opportunity score suggests unmet demand), but the artifact itself is not yet de-risked.
- Vendor negotiation and lock-in posture. An open-source, forkable adapter reduces the switching cost of adopting Fairu and gives you a fallback if the vendor relationship sours. Worth stating explicitly when comparing DAM shortlists.
- Use cases it unlocks: marketing sites with large, governed media libraries; multi-brand or multi-site estates needing one asset source; regulated content where asset provenance and expiry matter; teams that want editors picking DAM assets inside the CMS rather than tab-switching.
When to Consider This Package
Consider it when:
- You are already standardized on Statamic (Laravel-based) and are either on Fairu or actively shortlisting it.
- Media volume, rights management, or brand consistency has outgrown Statamic's native assets and ad-hoc folder conventions.
- You want editors to browse and insert Fairu assets from inside the Statamic control panel, with the DAM remaining authoritative.
- You can treat the integration as a spike or pilot: timeboxed, owned by an engineer, with a documented exit path (fork, vendor, or replace).
- You have in-house PHP/Laravel capability to read the source, pin the version, and patch it — the addon's surface area is small enough to audit in an afternoon.
Look elsewhere when:
- You are not on Statamic, or not on Fairu. This is a two-sided dependency; neither side is substitutable.
- You need a vendor-supported integration with SLAs, a security review trail, or a compliance attestation. A zero-adoption community package is unlikely to satisfy procurement.
- The integration sits on a critical publishing path for revenue-generating content. Low maturity plus zero dependents means no implicit community regression testing.
- Native Statamic assets, or a simpler "upload to S3/CDN and tag in the CMS" pattern, already meet the need. DAM is a real operational cost; don't adopt one to solve a problem you don't have.
- Your stack is WordPress, Drupal, Adobe, or a headless JS frontend — the adapter's value does not transfer.
- You require long-term maintenance guarantees and cannot absorb the cost of forking or replacing it.
How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)
For executives (one paragraph): We have an opportunity to connect our CMS to a proper digital asset management system at a fraction of the usual integration cost, because a ready-made connector already exists. It would let marketing publish faster with consistent, approved brand assets and give legal a single place to enforce rights and expiry — instead of assets being re-uploaded and re-cropped per site. The connector itself is early-stage and unproven, so the recommendation is a timeboxed pilot on one site, not a platform commitment. Budget should assume we own the code once adopted.
For engineering (one paragraph): This is a small Laravel package that adds Fairu as an asset source inside Statamic's control panel — Composer-installable, thin adapter, limited API surface. The risk is maturity, not complexity: zero stars, zero dependents, single maintainer, no evidence of production use. Proposal: pin the version, review the source and its Fairu API calls, run it in a branch against a non-critical site, and confirm the upgrade path for both Statamic and Fairu majors. Assume we may fork and maintain it; that cost should be estimated before adoption, not after.
Framing to use: "The integration pattern is proven; this specific implementation is not. So we validate cheaply, keep the exit open, and avoid making it a dependency on anything we can't afford to re-do."
