sumocoders/framework-settings-bundle
A Symfony bundle for managing configurable application settings in SumoCoders projects. It provides a settings service and framework integration to define, store, and retrieve application configuration values cleanly.
Adoption criteria (all would have to hold — realistically none do):
Look elsewhere when (i.e., essentially always):
FrameworkSettingsBundle, DI-extension conventions). Use Laravel's native config, a small Eloquent-backed settings table, or a maintained package like spatie/laravel-settings.Maintained alternatives worth evaluating instead: Symfony's native parameters/config, a Doctrine-backed key/value settings entity, sylius/settings-bundle (actively maintained, larger surface), or — on Laravel — spatie/laravel-settings.
To executives: This dependency is not viable and I recommend against it. It is archived, unmaintained since 2018, and has no measurable adoption (one star, zero known dependents, no releases in seven years). Adopting it creates unpatched security exposure, blocks PHP and framework upgrades over time, and leaves us with no support path. The functionality it describes — storing editable settings — is a few dozen lines of our own code. The risk is asymmetric: small savings now, a forced rewrite later.
To engineering: The package is a Symfony bundle, which is the wrong ecosystem if the target is Laravel. Even in a Symfony context, it's a thin convention layer over settings storage, carrying the full cost of a dead dependency. The equivalent is a small settings table plus a cached accessor and a typed config object — we own it, we test it, we upgrade it on our schedule. If someone has concrete evidence it saves meaningful work, the question to ask is: what does this do that ~50 lines of our own code does not? Absent a compelling answer, the recommendation is to build the narrow version and keep our dependency surface clean.
