Moeda Real Laravel Package

stonkeep/moeda-real

stonkeep/moeda-real is a Laravel/PHP package for working with Brazilian Real (BRL). It offers convenient helpers to format monetary values as R$, parse localized currency strings, and handle Real amounts cleanly in your applications. Simple, framework-friendly utilities for currency input, display,...

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Back-office localization for the Brazilian market. If your roadmap includes BR customers, sellers, or finance ops, this package is a data point in the "how much do we invest in pt-BR formatting?" decision. It solves a narrow slice: rendering monetary values as R$ 1.234,56 inside Laravel Nova admin resources.
  • Build vs. buy for internal tooling. Nova fields are commodity UI. This is a reference implementation of a pattern your team will need repeatedly (currency inputs, price columns, invoice totals), so the real decision is whether to standardize an internal field library rather than vendor one per use case.
  • Admin UX investment for finance-adjacent surfaces. Pricing screens, subscription plan editors, payout/reconciliation tables, and marketplace commission views all benefit from correctly formatted and masked currency input — reducing mistyped decimal separators is a measurable ops-quality win (fewer off-by-100 errors in invoices).
  • Multi-currency / LATAM expansion. If expansion beyond Brazil is plausible, the decision flips: a single-currency field becomes tech debt. This package is useful mainly as a signal to scope a currency-agnostic approach (store integer minor units, format at the presentation layer).
  • Not a product differentiator. Nothing here changes customer-facing capability. It should be evaluated as an engineering convenience with a small time-saving delta, not as a roadmap item.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only when all of the following hold:

  • You already run Laravel Nova (a paid license) — otherwise the package is inert, and Nova itself should be the decision under review.
  • You need exactly one thing: display/mask BRL in Nova resource forms and index columns.
  • You have verified version compatibility yourself — Nova 4 vs. Nova 5, Laravel and PHP constraints. The listing gives no compatibility matrix, no tests, no CI badge.
  • You are comfortable pinning and reading the source, because the maintenance signal is effectively absent.

Look elsewhere — or build in-house — when:

  • Supply-chain confidence matters. Zero stars, zero dependents, and no visible release history means no community validation and no failure signal. For a package that sits in an admin panel touching financial figures, "nobody uses this" is a real risk, not a cosmetic one.
  • You need correctness guarantees. Monetary display belongs on top of a vetted money library (moneyphp/money, or Laravel's own Number/NumberFormatter helpers) plus a thin Nova field. A bespoke formatter with no tests is the wrong place to hold your only currency logic.
  • You need anything beyond BRL — multi-currency, FX, locale-aware separators, rounding policy, or storing minor units.
  • You want a maintained dependency. Prefer a field you own, or one with active releases and tests, so an upgrade to Nova 5 doesn't strand you.

Pragmatic recommendation: treat this repository as a reference implementation, not a dependency. The functionality is small enough (a formatter plus a mask) that copying the approach into your own Nova field is a few hours of work and removes an unmaintained third-party from your admin stack.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small UI plugin for our internal admin panel that displays Brazilian currency correctly. It is a convenience, not a capability — it saves roughly a day of engineering and carries no strategic value. I do not recommend budgeting for it. Our recommendation is to implement the equivalent formatting ourselves so we control maintenance and don't inherit an unmaintained dependency in a screen that shows money.

To engineering: It's a Nova field for BRL formatting. Low complexity, but also low signal — no stars, no dependents, no visible tests or version support. Don't add it as a dependency. Instead: use it as a reference, build a ~50–100 line internal Nova field backed by moneyphp/money or Laravel's Number helpers, store all monetary values as integer minor units, and format only at the presentation layer. That gives us Nova 5 upgrade safety, multi-currency headroom, and one place to fix formatting bugs.

To product/design: Correct currency display and input masking in finance screens reduces operator error (misplaced decimal separators on invoices and payouts). That's the real benefit here, and it's achievable without this specific package.
