Filament Debugger Laravel Package

stephenjude/filament-debugger

Filament Debugger is a debugging companion for Laravel Filament admin panels, helping developers inspect issues and troubleshoot behavior from within the Filament UI. It streamlines local debugging workflows and makes diagnosing panel problems faster and more convenient.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for internal tooling. This package is a thin integration layer (~a few service providers/views) that surfaces Laravel Telescope, Horizon, and Pulse inside an existing Filament admin panel. The decision it informs is not "should we build an observability platform" but "do we spend 1–3 engineering days wiring nav items, authorization gates, and embedded views ourselves, or adopt a maintained MIT package for that glue?" For a team already on Filament, adoption is usually the cheaper path; for a team not on Filament, it is a non-starter.
  • Consolidating the operator surface area. It supports a roadmap decision to make the Filament admin panel the single pane of glass for both business operations and technical health. If support leads, on-call engineers, and ops staff already live in Filament, adding Horizon (queue health) and Pulse (app performance) reduces context-switching to separate /telescope and /horizon routes with separate auth.
  • Exposure policy for production diagnostics. Because Telescope and Pulse are data-rich and can leak request payloads, headers, and PII, adopting this package forces an explicit product decision: which roles see which diagnostic module, in which environments. That is a security/product gate, not just a config toggle — and it is the most consequential decision this package touches.
  • Prioritizing which observability signals reach non-engineers. Horizon queue metrics are legible to operations and support managers (failed jobs, wait times); Telescope is engineer-only; Pulse dashboards sit in between. The package lets you ship a tiered rollout — e.g., queue health to ops first — without new infrastructure.
  • Feature scoping for an "admin panel" epic. If a Filament admin panel is on the roadmap, this is a low-cost line item that increases perceived internal-tool value ("we can see queue backlogs and slow endpoints from the same place we manage customers") without expanding the platform's external surface.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when all of the following hold:

  • The product already runs Filament as its admin/back-office UI, on a version the package supports — verify Filament v3 vs. v4 compatibility against the package's release notes before committing, since this is the single most common breakage point.
  • You already use (or plan to use) at least two of Telescope / Horizon / Pulse. Pulling in a wrapper for one tool is not worth the dependency.
  • You have a role/permission model (Filament's built-in authorization, Shield, or your own gates) that can restrict these panels to engineering or ops roles. If you cannot gate it, do not ship it.
  • Your team is comfortable with a single-maintainer, low-adoption package (105 stars, 0 dependents) and has the capacity to vendor or fork it if it goes stale. The MIT license makes forking viable; treat that as the mitigation, not a reason to skip the evaluation.

Look elsewhere or build in-house when:

  • You are not on Filament. The entire value proposition collapses; use the native Telescope/Horizon/Pulse routes behind your existing auth middleware — that is roughly what this package does anyway.
  • Your security posture forbids diagnostic data in the admin panel. Exposing Telescope in a production admin surface is a real data-leak vector. If that is a hard no, this is a hard no.
  • You need managed/APM-grade observability (Sentry, Datadog, New Relic, hosted Pulse alternatives). This package organizes access to first-party Laravel tooling; it does not add retention, alerting, cross-service tracing, or historical analysis.
  • Zero-dependency or long-term-support constraints apply. A one-maintainer package with no downstream dependents carries abandonment risk; if your dependency policy requires active multi-maintainer projects, skip it and reimplement the ~100 lines of glue.
  • You only need Pulse. Laravel Pulse ships its own dashboard; the incremental value here is nav integration and consistent auth, which may not justify a dependency.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (one paragraph): This is a small, free (MIT), low-risk convenience package that puts our existing Laravel monitoring tools — queue health, request traces, and performance dashboards — inside the admin panel our team already uses. It is a developer-experience improvement, not a new platform: no vendor cost, no new infrastructure, no data leaving our systems. Expected effort is measured in hours, and because it is MIT-licensed we can fork it if the maintainer stops. The one real decision it forces is a security one: we must explicitly define which roles can see diagnostics data in production, and we should treat that as a gate before rollout.

For engineering: You get Telescope, Horizon, and Pulse as Filament pages with consistent navigation and authorization instead of three separate routes with three separate access rules. Trade-off: single maintainer, ~105 stars, zero dependents, so pin the version, confirm Filament compatibility on each upgrade, and be prepared to vendor the handful of service providers and views. Cost of entry is low enough that "fork it later" is a credible Plan B — which is exactly why we should not over-invest in evaluation.

Recommendation: Adopt as an internal-tooling convenience for teams already on Filament, gated behind an engineering/ops role, and validated in staging first. Do not treat it as a strategic observability investment, and do not adopt it as a reason to choose Filament.
