Product Decisions This Supports
- Build vs. adopt for host health visibility. This package is a candidate to satisfy a narrow, non-differentiating need: surfacing server/runtime state (CPU, memory, disk, uptime) inside a Laravel app. If the need is real, adopting a small single-purpose package beats spending engineering time shelling out to
df/free and formatting the output ourselves.
- Internal ops tooling roadmap. The realistic use case is an admin/ops panel (Filament, Nova, or a custom dashboard) that shows "is the box healthy?" to operators. It is not a customer-facing feature and should not be scheduled as one.
- Not a decision input for v1.1.1 specifically. The release is a patch with a changelog link and no described changes. Treat it as a maintenance signal (the maintainer is still shipping), not a capability change. Do not plan roadmap work that depends on new functionality from this version.
- Low-commitment dependency. Small surface area means low switching cost — a reasonable "take the commodity utility, reserve our engineers for differentiating work" decision, contingent on the diligence in the next section.
Evidence caveat: the only release data available is a patch version bump with an empty changelog body. Everything below is screening guidance, not a validated capability review; the package's actual API surface and supported Laravel/PHP matrix must be confirmed before any commitment.
When to Consider This Package
Consider it when:
- You run a Laravel app and need read-only host/runtime metrics presented to operators, not to end users.
- You want the cheapest path to a "system status" widget and are willing to pin a version and read a small codebase before merging.
- The blast radius is genuinely small: display-only, no write path into production data, no schema changes.
- You can gate the routes behind existing admin auth and middleware.
- The repo shows live maintenance, a clear license, tests/CI, and a Laravel/PHP support matrix matching your stack.
Look elsewhere when:
- You actually need observability — retention, alerting, time-series, multi-node aggregation. That is Prometheus + node_exporter, CloudWatch, Datadog, or Laravel Pulse/Telescope, not a resources package.
- Exposing host internals over HTTP is a security or compliance concern you cannot cleanly mitigate.
- The repo is stale, untested, unlicensed, or the version you need is outside your supported Laravel/PHP range.
- Your team already has a monitoring story; adding a second, weaker source of truth creates confusion about which dashboard is authoritative.
How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)
For executives: This is a small open-source Laravel add-on that surfaces server health — CPU, memory, disk — inside our existing admin tooling, so operators stop context-switching to look at a box. It is a convenience layer, not our monitoring system of record. The newest release, v1.1.1, is a patch with no described changes: low risk, no migration cost, and a positive signal that the maintainer is still active. Recommendation: a timeboxed half-day spike inside the admin panel, adopted only if the code is small, tested, and the license is acceptable; otherwise we keep our current tooling and move on.
For engineering: Single-purpose, trivially removable dependency — pin the version and read the diff before merging, since the release notes are a changelog link only. Gate any exposed routes behind admin auth and rate limiting, and verify the supported Laravel/PHP matrix and test coverage first. Expect no API changes from a patch bump, but confirm that rather than assume it.
