Viewcomponent Laravel Package

starychfojtu/viewcomponent

A Laravel package for creating reusable, class-based view components, helping keep Blade templates clean and UI logic organized. It offers a simple way to define, render, and compose components across your application.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Does not support a live feature decision on a Laravel codebase. This is a Symfony 3.3 bundle, not a Laravel package — the framework mismatch alone disqualifies it from any Laravel roadmap item.
  • Informs the "componentized UI" build-vs-buy call only as prior art. The pattern it implements (encapsulated markup + logic + tests per UI unit) is already a first-class, maintained feature in both ecosystems: class-based/anonymous Blade components in Laravel 7+, and Symfony UX Twig Components on Symfony 5.3+. The build decision is "use what the framework ships," not "integrate this."
  • Useful as a reference artifact in an architecture research spike or ADR comparing view-component approaches (Rails ViewComponent → this bundle → Twig Components). Budget: an hour of reading, not a sprint.
  • Explicitly not a candidate for: a platform modernization initiative, a design-system migration, or a shared internal component library — all of which require an actively patched dependency with a support path.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only in these narrow, non-production cases:

  • You are maintaining a legacy Symfony 3.3 application on PHP 5.5–7.1 that is already frozen and cannot be upgraded, and you want a read-only reference for how a component abstraction was wired into that specific Symfony version.
  • You want a historical/architectural comparison point when writing an internal standards doc on component-driven templating.

Look elsewhere — decisively — when any of the following hold:

  • You are on Laravel. Use Blade class-based or anonymous components; for reactive UI, Livewire or Volt. There is no integration path here worth the engineering cost.
  • You are on Symfony 5.3 or newer. Use Symfony UX Twig Components; it is the maintained, tested successor to this idea.
  • You need PHP 8+, Twig 3, or Symfony 5/6/7 compatibility. The last release was September 2017, targeting an end-of-life Symfony.
  • You require any of: active maintainer, security response, semver guarantees, or a community to escalate to. Zero stars, zero dependents, and a seven-year-old release mean effectively no battle testing and no support channel.
  • You want to standardize a design system across teams. A dependency with no downstream consumers is a single point of failure you would own entirely.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

Recommendation: do not adopt. Zero engineering budget for integration.

For executives (30 seconds): We evaluated a community library that implements a UI-component pattern. It targets an end-of-life framework version, is not built for Laravel, has had no release since 2017, and has no known users or maintainer. The pattern is valuable; this implementation is not, and both Laravel and Symfony now ship the pattern natively at no cost. Adopting it would add maintenance and security liability while replacing functionality we already have.

For engineering: The idea — co-locating a component's template, logic, and tests — is worth keeping. The code is a 2017 experiment against Symfony 3.3 and should be treated as prior art only. If a team wants a component abstraction, the answer is Blade components (Laravel) or Twig Components (Symfony), both maintained upstream and already in our stack.

Risks if adopted anyway: unpatched dependency surface, no upgrade path past PHP 7.x-era APIs, single-maintainer abandonment, and full ownership of any fork we create. Cost of saying no: zero — the capability is available natively and free.
