Encrypt Bundle Laravel Package

specshaper/encrypt-bundle

SpecShaper EncryptBundle adds transparent Doctrine field encryption to Symfony apps. Mark entity properties as encrypted and the bundle automatically handles encryption and decryption, keeping sensitive database data protected at rest with configurable keys.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit: Poor for a Laravel-first stack. Despite being framed as a Laravel/PHP package, mogilvie/EncryptBundle is a Symfony bundle with Doctrine-oriented integration patterns. Laravel uses Eloquent, service providers, facades, and custom casts; the bundle’s Symfony DI/event-subscriber model does not map cleanly. A TPM should treat this as a reference implementation for field-level encryption, not a drop-in Laravel dependency.

Integration feasibility: Low as-is. There is no native Laravel service provider, config publishing, Eloquent cast, migration guidance, or Laravel-compatible key-management layer. Feasible paths are: (1) fork the cipher/primitives and wrap them in a Laravel package, or (2) use Laravel’s built-in encryption/casts or a vetted Laravel-native package. Forking introduces ownership of security-critical code.

Technical risk: High. Encryption is security-critical, and the package shows weak ecosystem validation: 105 stars, 0 dependents, and a low opportunity score of 33.67. The last release date of 2026-02-19 is future-dated and should be validated as a metadata anomaly. Unknowns include algorithm choice, authenticated encryption, IV handling, key rotation, KMS/Vault support, blind indexes, and test coverage.

Key questions: What is the license? Which PHP/Laravel versions are supported? Is it Doctrine-only? Does it use AES-GCM or another authenticated mode? How are keys stored and rotated? Does it support envelope encryption with KMS/Vault? How are nullable, JSON, and large text fields handled? Does it support searchable encryption or blind indexes? Are plaintext values ever logged? Is there a security audit or test-vector suite? Who maintains it, and what is the release cadence? Why are there zero dependents?

Integration Approach

Stack fit: Weak for Laravel/Eloquent. If the requirement is field-level encryption in Laravel, prefer Laravel’s encrypted casts or a thin internal package around a vetted crypto library/KMS. If the organization runs Symfony/Doctrine, the bundle may fit; that is outside the stated Laravel scope. Leverage this package only as a design reference or isolated cipher fork.

Migration path: Do not migrate production data through the bundle directly. Prototype in a non-production environment: inventory sensitive fields, define data classification, choose envelope encryption and key rotation, implement an Eloquent cast plus blind indexes where lookup is required, then backfill/re-encrypt in batches. If forking, isolate cipher code, remove Symfony/Doctrine coupling, add Laravel provider/config, and build test vectors before any data migration.

Compatibility: Verify PHP 8.1+ support, Laravel 10/11/12 compatibility, composer conflicts with Symfony components, database column types and ciphertext expansion, queue/serialization behavior, and API resource exposure. Encrypted fields cannot be queried normally; blind indexes or deterministic tokens need separate design. Doctrine annotations/attributes are irrelevant to Eloquent.

Sequencing: 1) Security spike and source review; 2) decide build vs. fork vs. Laravel-native; 3) design key management and rotation; 4) implement cast/package and tests; 5) validate failure modes and test vectors; 6) backfill in staging; 7) roll out behind a feature flag; 8) document rotation and incident runbooks. Do not sequence implementation before algorithm and key-management review.

Operational Impact

Maintenance: High ownership burden if forked. With 0 dependents, limited stars, and uncertain release metadata, the package does not provide strong production-maintenance signals. A TPM should assume the team owns security patches, PHP upgrades, and crypto review. Using it unforked creates dependency risk on a low-activity bundle.

Support: Limited. There is no Laravel-specific documentation or community. Escalation depends on the maintainer, and internal crypto expertise will be required for review, rotation, and incident response. Vendor support should not be assumed.

Scaling: Field-level encryption adds CPU cost; KMS/Vault envelope encryption adds latency and quota risk. Ciphertext is larger than plaintext, blind indexes add storage, and batch re-encryption is expensive. Horizontal scaling is feasible only if keys are consistently available; KMS throttling and cache plaintext exposure are key risks.

Failure modes: Lost keys cause permanent data loss; rotation errors cause decrypt failures; unauthenticated ciphertext enables tampering; IV reuse weakens encryption; plaintext can leak through logs, queues, exceptions, or API resources; encrypted fields break queries and reports; partial migrations create mixed-state data; composer/Symfony conflicts and PHP upgrades can block deployment.

Ramp-up: The team needs both Laravel Eloquent-cast knowledge and applied cryptography review. A TPM should plan a security spike before commitment, then a build/rollout phase sized to the number of fields and compliance scope. Ramp-up is not a simple package install; it is a key-management and data-migration program with ongoing operational ownership.
