sop/x509
Sop/X509 is a PHP library for X.509 certificate handling, offering an object-oriented API to parse, create, sign, and validate certificates and CSRs. Useful for PKI, TLS, and secure PHP application workflows.
sop/x509 lets you buy (adopt) instead of building: certificates, CSRs, attribute certificates, and certification path validation in one MIT-licensed dependency, rather than hand-rolling DER parsing or shelling out to openssl CLI.ext-openssl, which is thin on attribute certificates (role/authorization assertions bound to a key). If a RBAC/delegated-authorization design calls for them, this is one of the few pure-PHP options — a differentiator worth prototyping.Adopt when:
openssl_x509_parse / openssl_csr_* don't cover the semantics you need.ext-openssl on the target runtime, or a hosting environment where you can't rely on it).Look elsewhere when:
For executives: This is a small, MIT-licensed PHP component that lets us add certificate-based features — enterprise single sign-on with client certificates, certificate request handling for private PKI, signed-document and device verification — without a vendor contract or a from-scratch crypto project. The strategic value is market access: certificate support is a recurring blocker in enterprise and regulated deals. The cost is engineering time, not licence fees. The risk is maintenance: it's a low-profile open-source project (roughly 42 stars, last release February 2024), so we should plan to own our copy, wrap it behind an internal interface, and keep an exit path. Recommendation: fund a short spike, not a full commitment.
For engineering: Treat sop/x509 as an X.509/ASN.1 primitive layer — parsing, CSR and attribute-certificate construction, and path validation — not as a security boundary. Isolate it behind a CertificateService-style interface so it's swappable with ext-openssl or another library. Pin the version, vendor the source, and add malformed-input and fuzz tests before it touches untrusted certificates, since DER parsing is attacker-facing surface. Measure throughput on realistic volumes early. Deliverable from the spike: a working chain-validation path plus a written go/no-go on maintenance risk.
