H5P Extractor Laravel Package

snordian/h5p-extractor

A Laravel/PHP package for extracting H5P content packages. It helps developers parse, inspect, and access H5P files, metadata, and assets directly from their applications, simplifying work with interactive H5P content.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature enablement: Server-side generation of H5P content as HTML and plain text — the 0.4.1 release extends extraction to plain text generators for all supported content types. This unlocks content delivery where the H5P client-side JavaScript runtime can't (or shouldn't) run: static site exports, PDF/certificate generation, email digests, SEO-crawlable landing pages, and archiving of interactive modules as HTML snapshots.
  • New — text-first pipelines: Plain-text output means H5P content can now feed search indexing, full-text search backends, LLM/RAG ingestion, summarization, translation workflows, content diffing/versioning, and readability/accessibility audits. Previously these required scraping or bespoke parsers; that's a meaningfully broader surface than "static HTML export."
  • New — machine-readable fallback layer: A text representation is the cheapest possible graceful degradation: <noscript> content, screen-reader-friendly versions, RSS/email bodies, and structured-log/preview snippets for authoring UIs.
  • Roadmap options: Supports a "course/content export" capability (exporting an H5P-based lesson to a static bundle, plain-text transcript, or LMS-agnostic package) without rebuilding your authoring or player stack. Also viable as an accessibility/interop fallback layer alongside the normal H5P player, and as the ingestion step for a searchable content corpus.
  • Build vs. buy (adopt): Rather than commissioning an in-house H5P-to-HTML/text extraction pipeline, this buys the parsing/extraction logic as a dependency — and now covers two output formats, which roughly doubles the leverage per integration. Because dependents are at 0 and stars are low, treat it as "adopt with a thin internal wrapper" — isolate both render modes behind an interface so they can be swapped for H5P's core libraries or a custom extractor later.
  • Use cases to evaluate: static marketing/help pages with interactive explainers; PDF study guides from H5P quizzes; pre-rendering for crawlers/indexing; offline or low-bandwidth distribution; content migration/archival where you want the content, not the runtime; search indexing and RAG/LLM ingestion of existing H5P libraries; transcripts and accessibility artifacts; content-diff/preview tooling for editors.
  • Non-goals: This is not a replacement for H5P's client player, and plain text is not a fidelity guarantee. It produces extracted text/HTML, so plan UX around loss of interactivity and loss of structure (drag-and-drop, branching scenarios, media embeds, math/MathML, custom content types not in the "supported" list). If you need semantics preserved for downstream processing, validate the text output against your specific content types before committing.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You already author or license H5P content and need that content rendered in a PHP/Laravel context without a browser JS runtime.
  • You need server-generated snapshots for export, print/PDF, SEO, email, or archival workflows.
  • You need searchable, indexable, or LLM-ingestible text from H5P content and don't want to write per-content-type parsers yourself.
  • You want a text fallback/transcript alongside existing H5P rendering for accessibility or low-bandwidth users.
  • You want a low-integration-effort path and can accept limited interactivity and structure loss in the output.
  • Your team is comfortable wrapping a small, single-maintainer PHP library and pinning a version.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need fully interactive H5P experiences — use H5P's core runtime (h5p-php-library / the H5P player) instead; this package is an extraction utility, not a player.
  • You require vendor support, SLAs, or production-proven scale (6 stars, 0 dependents, single maintainer = concentration risk).
  • H5P isn't already part of your content strategy — adopting this forces you into the H5P content model and tooling ecosystem.
  • Your pipeline is Node/Python-first; a native extractor will be easier to own than a PHP bridge — this remains true even with the new text output.
  • You need guaranteed structural/semantic fidelity from text extraction (question types, answer keys, branching logic). "Plain text" is lossy by design; assume you own fidelity fixes yourself.
  • You need rich, frequently-changing output formats; expect to own fidelity fixes yourself.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, cheap lever that lets us reuse the interactive content we already have in places it currently can't go — static pages, PDFs, emails, and customer-facing exports — and, with the 0.4.1 update, it now also turns that content into plain text we can index, search, and feed into AI/summarization features without another content migration. Potentially expands reach and supports a portability/export story for customers. The cost is negligible and the integration is contained behind one interface. The caveat: it's still a niche, low-adoption open-source library maintained by one person, so the recommendation is a time-boxed pilot on non-critical content before any roadmap commitment.

To engineering: It's a PHP library (not Laravel-specific) that extracts H5P content to HTML and, as of 0.4.1, to plain text for all supported content types — server-side, sidestepping the H5P JS runtime. 0.4.1 is additive (new generators, no breaking changes), so our existing HTML path is unaffected; adding text output is a new method call, not a migration. Integrate behind a domain interface (ContentRenderer with renderHtml() / renderText() or an adapter per mode) so we can swap implementations and control upgrades independently. Evaluate both modes against our actual H5P content types for fidelity, add golden-file tests on representative packages (HTML and text), pin the version, and document the fallback path (H5P core libraries or custom extraction) if maintenance stalls. Release cadence is current (0.4.x, actively adding capability), so the maintenance signal is acceptable — the risk is adoption breadth, not abandonment. Still pre-1.0: expect API churn on minor bumps.
