smorken/storage
A Laravel storage helper package that streamlines saving, retrieving, and organizing files across local and cloud disks, with a clean API for uploads, file attachments, and everyday filesystem tasks in Eloquent applications.
Storage facade for managing disks (local, S3, etc.), or configure disks natively. This package is a thin service-provider wrapper around that facade, so it informs the "wrap vs. configure" decision rather than the storage decision itself.config/filesystems.php unless a concrete gap appears.league/flysystem-* adapters, spatie/laravel-medialibrary), so the package does not own any of these jobs.Adoption criteria (all would need to be true, and none are):
None of these hold. Do not adopt for new development.
Reasonable, narrow situations:
composer require it.Look elsewhere when:
league/flysystem-aws-s3-v3 (or the GCS/Azure equivalents) directly with Laravel's Storage facade.spatie/laravel-medialibrary.To executives (one paragraph): We evaluated smorken/storage, a Laravel storage provider, and recommend against adopting it. It is formally deprecated upstream, has no stars and no downstream dependents, and duplicates functionality Laravel already provides out of the box. Taking it on would create an unowned maintenance and security liability in the file-handling path — the part of the product that touches customer uploads — with no offsetting capability. The opportunity score of 17.66 reflects that: technically present, strategically inert. Our recommendation is to build on the framework's native storage layer and spend the saved effort on product surface instead of dependency management.
To engineering: Laravel's Storage facade plus Flysystem adapters already covers disks, drivers, signed URLs, and streaming. This package is a service-provider wrapper around that, unmaintained and deprecated. Use native config/filesystems.php; pull in league/flysystem-aws-s3-v3 or friends if you need cloud drivers. If it already exists in a codebase, treat removal as a small, low-risk migration — verify no custom driver registration depends on it, move config into the native filesystem config, and delete the dependency. Do not fork it; there is no capability worth carrying forward.
Bottom line: Deny for new work. Remove where present. The package's only durable value is as a cautionary data point in our dependency-review criteria — deprecation status and zero downstream adoption should be automatic disqualifiers in future evaluations.
