Propel Serializer Bundle Laravel Package

smirik/propel-serializer-bundle

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Not a fit for Laravel-based roadmaps. This is a Symfony bundle (SmirikPropelSerializerBundle), not a Laravel package. It only matters to teams already running Symfony with the legacy Propel ORM, so it should not enter a Laravel package-evaluation backlog at all.
  • API/serialization layer decisions in legacy Propel apps. If product surface area includes JSON APIs or export formats on a Propel/Symfony stack, this bundle is a candidate for standardizing model-to-JSON serialization rather than teams hand-rolling toArray() methods per controller.
  • Build-vs-buy for serializer plumbing. The decision it informs is narrow: adopt a small pre-built serializer bundle vs. write ~100–300 lines of custom serialization code vs. migrate off Propel to Doctrine and use Symfony's native serializer component. Given zero stars, zero dependents, and zero score, the realistic output of evaluation is "build small, or migrate—don't adopt."
  • Tech-debt and modernization sequencing. Finding this package in a dependency tree is a signal to prioritize an ORM migration roadmap item (Propel → Doctrine) rather than deepening investment in Propel-specific tooling.
  • Not a roadmap enabler for new features. There is no community, release cadence, or security posture to anchor launch commitments on. It should not appear in plans for new customer-facing capabilities.

When to Consider This Package

  • Only if all of the following hold: the codebase is Symfony (not Laravel), already uses Propel ORM in production, and the team needs a lightweight, conventional way to serialize Propel models to JSON for an internal tool or a small existing API.
  • Only as a short-lived bridge. Acceptable if the plan is to migrate off Propel within a defined window and the serializer is disposable.
  • Look elsewhere immediately if: the stack is Laravel, Eloquent, or Doctrine; the API is public-facing and subject to security review (an unmaintained, zero-adoption dependency will not pass dependency-risk review); you need pagination, versioning, JSON:API, or schema validation; or you need active maintenance, CVE response, or PHP 8.x compatibility guarantees.
  • Default recommendation: do not adopt. Zero stars, zero dependents, and a zero score indicate a personal, unmaintained project. For greenfield work, use Symfony's serializer with Doctrine, or Laravel's API Resources with Eloquent.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is not a package we should add to our stack. It is a small, unmaintained Symfony/Propel utility with no user base and no dependents—adopting it would create a maintenance liability for negligible time savings. Its only value is as a signal: if we find it or anything like it in our code, we have legacy Propel surface area worth scheduling for migration.

To engineering: If you are on Symfony + Propel and need model serialization for an internal endpoint, this bundle shows a reasonable pattern, but it is faster and safer to copy the pattern into ~200 lines of in-house code than to take a dependency on a project with no releases, no community, and no PHP-version guarantees. Recommend we standardize serialization on Symfony's serializer component and treat Propel removal as a tracked backlog item rather than investing in Propel-specific tooling.

Decision: Reject for adoption; log as evidence for ORM modernization planning.
