Searchable Select Laravel Package

sloveniangooner/searchable-select

A Blade-ready Laravel package that adds a fast, searchable select dropdown to forms. It supports filtering large option lists, AJAX/server-side search, and a clean, customizable UI for quicker, more accurate single-value selection.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • The package is a Laravel Nova custom field: a PHP Field class plus compiled Vue/JS assets that render a searchable dropdown inside Nova's admin UI. It sits at the presentation layer of the admin panel only — no domain logic, no persistence hooks, no queue/event surface.
  • Fit is therefore narrow but clean: it plugs into fields() on a Nova Resource and does not touch application models, migrations, or APIs. Blast radius is confined to admin CRUD screens.
  • The real architectural question is whether we need it at all. Nova's native BelongsTo field already supports searchable(), and Nova's Select field handles static option lists. This package only adds value for large non-relationship option sets (e.g., 500+ enum values, config-driven lists) where native Select becomes unusable. If our use cases are relationship-backed, this is redundant.
  • Because it is a Nova field, it is coupled to Nova's internal JS API, which has historically broken across majors (Nova 3 = Vue 2; Nova 4+ = Vue 3/Inertia). That coupling, not the PHP side, is the architectural fragility.

Integration feasibility

  • Mechanically trivial: composer require, then reference the field class in a Resource. No service provider wiring in most Nova field packages, no config publishing beyond optional asset publishing.
  • Feasibility is gated by evidence, not effort. With 0 stars, 0 dependents, and a 0 score, there is no production signal. We cannot claim "battle-tested"; we must treat this as unvetted third-party code entering an admin surface that operators depend on daily.
  • Nova's commercial license also constrains CI: we cannot freely spin up Nova in a public pipeline to test the field's compiled assets, so verification must happen in a licensed internal environment.

Technical risk

  • Abandonment (high): single maintainer, no visible release cadence, no dependents. Any Nova upgrade likely strands us.
  • Version coupling (high): unclear support matrix for Nova 4/5 and PHP 8.2/8.3. Stale compiled dist/ assets are the most common failure in this package category.
  • Search implementation (medium): unknown whether filtering is client-side over a fully hydrated option list (breaks past a few hundred options, bloats page payload) or server-side AJAX (needs an endpoint, auth, and rate considerations). This determines whether the package solves our stated problem.
  • Supply chain (medium): small, unaudited dependency injected into an admin panel; needs composer audit, license check, and a read of the source before adoption.
  • Opportunity score of 16.24 reinforces the above: low strategic upside against non-trivial vendor risk.

Key questions

  1. Which Nova versions and PHP/Laravel versions are supported, and when was the last compatibility commit?
  2. Is search client-side or server-side? What is the practical option-count ceiling?
  3. Does it support relationship-backed options, or static arrays only? Does it preserve Nova's resolveUsing/dependsOn/validation meta?
  4. Is the compiled JS built against the current Nova asset API, or checked in from an older release?
  5. License, security posture, and whether the source is readable enough to fork and own.
  6. What happens on empty results, nullable values, and existing stored values that fall outside the option set (silent data loss risk)?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Assumes Laravel + Nova + Composer, which matches our stack. The only mismatch risk is Nova major version and frontend toolchain (Vue 2 vs Vue 3).
  • Fits cleanly as an admin-only concern. Do not let it leak into public-facing forms or API validation paths.
  • If our option sets are relationship-driven, the correct fit is native BelongsTo::searchable() and this package should be rejected on redundancy grounds.

Migration path

  • Adoption is additive: add the field to one Resource, ship behind the admin panel, no schema change. Rollback is removing the field from fields() — cheap, but scattered across every Resource that used it.
  • If we later replace it (in-house field, maintained fork, or native field), the migration is a find-and-replace across Resource classes plus a manual UI regression pass. Low data risk, moderate toil. Mitigate by standardizing on a single wrapper class or trait so replacement touches one file.
  • Preferred path: 1–2 day internal spike in a licensed Nova sandbox against a representative large option set, then a build-vs-buy decision against a ~2-day in-house field.

Compatibility

  • Must verify against our exact Nova major and PHP runtime before any commitment; pin the Composer constraint and lock file.
  • Check asset publishing/path assumptions — many Nova fields assume vendor/ asset publishing that breaks under certain deploy layouts.
  • Confirm it degrades gracefully on Nova upgrades rather than throwing a blank field.

Sequencing

  1. License/source review and composer audit.
  2. Sandbox spike: install, render, test empty/null/large-set/stored-value cases, measure payload.
  3. Compare against native BelongsTo::searchable() and a minimal in-house field.
  4. If adopted: wrap in a single field class, pin version, document the fork/exit path.
  5. Pilot on one low-traffic Resource, then expand.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Effectively self-maintained. With no dependents and a single maintainer, we should budget for owning a fork on the first Nova upgrade. That is a recurring, unbounded cost for a UI convenience.
  • Vendor risk must be logged; review quarterly or on every Nova major.

Support

  • No community support channel of any substance. Internal docs and a named owner are mandatory.
  • Operators will file tickets for "dropdown doesn't load" as a broken admin, not as a package bug — triage cost lands on us.

Scaling

  • If client-side, page payload and browser responsiveness degrade with option count; this is the package's core scaling question and is unverified.
  • If server-side, each keystroke becomes a request against our app — needs debounce, auth scoping, and index-backed queries. Admin-scale traffic is low, so this is manageable, but the endpoint becomes part of our attack surface.

Failure modes

  • Blank or non-rendering field after a Nova upgrade (most likely).
  • Stale compiled assets served from dist/ — silent UI breakage with no PHP error.
  • Stored value not in current option set silently dropped or displayed empty, risking data corruption on save.
  • Search endpoint unauthenticated or unscoped, leaking option labels cross-tenant.
  • Composer resolution conflicts if the package pins old Laravel/Symfony constraints.

Ramp-up

  • Developer ramp-up is low: any Nova-fluent engineer can use or replace the field in hours.
  • Organizational ramp-up is the real cost — establishing the fork/ownership model, adding it to the vendor risk register, and building the regression checklist for Nova upgrades. That overhead likely exceeds the value of the field itself.
  • Recommendation: treat as a convenience, not a dependency. Validate against native Nova searchable fields first; adopt only if it survives the sandbox spike, and only behind a single internal wrapper with a documented exit to an in-house field.
