Product Decisions This Supports
- Internationalization readiness (roadmap gate). This package (via
ronanguilloux/IsoCodes) validates ISO 3166-1 country codes, ISO 639-1 languages, ISO 4217 currencies, and ISO 3166-2 subdivisions. That makes it a cheap prerequisite for "launch in new market" milestones: country pickers, currency selection, language preference, and regional address forms all get real validation instead of free-text fields.
- Build vs buy: buy (and it's nearly free). Writing and maintaining our own country/language/currency lists is a recurring data-hygiene tax; a small MIT-licensed wrapper over a maintained ISO dataset is the right call. The decision to make is which layer we buy — see the Laravel caveat below.
- Data integrity at the API boundary. Enforce country/currency/language codes server-side in checkout, onboarding/KYC, tax jurisdiction, shipping zone, and billing flows rather than trusting client dropdowns or partner payloads.
- Compliance and finance workflows. Currency and country codes feed VAT/tax determination, shipping origin/destination rules, and invoicing; invalid codes here create reporting and reconciliation defects that are expensive to unwind.
- Legacy data cleanup and migration. Useful as a validation pass over CRM/ERP imports (customer addresses, supplier countries, legacy currency fields) before migration, producing a clean exception report.
- Product surface it unblocks: localized pricing/currency switchers, region-scoped feature flags, country-specific legal copy, sanctions/geo gating (as a first filter only — not a compliance control).
- Explicit non-goal: it validates format/membership in ISO lists, not business truth — no VAT-number verification, no sanctions/PEP screening, no address existence checks.
When to Consider This Package
Adopt when:
- You need membership validation of country, language, currency, or subdivision codes — including the two-letter vs three-letter country-code distinction.
- You are on Symfony and already use the Symfony Validator component; here the package is a drop-in constraint and the wrapper earns its place.
- You want the ISO datasets maintained upstream rather than hand-rolled enums, at zero license cost (MIT).
- The surface area of the dependency is small enough that you're comfortable pinning a version and reviewing occasional updates yourself.
Look elsewhere (or adapt) when:
- You're on Laravel. This is a Symfony Validator wrapper; Laravel has its own validation pipeline. The pragmatic path is to depend on
ronanguilloux/IsoCodes directly and write a custom Rule (iso_country, iso_currency, iso_language). Adopting the Symfony bridge to get a constraint object is added indirection for no product benefit. Treat the underlying library as the "buy" and skip this wrapper.
- You need geo-political edge cases. Disputed territories, historical currencies, embargoed regions, or region-specific code aliasing are policy decisions, not validation problems — they need an owned decision table on top.
- You need compliance-grade checks. VAT number validation, sanctions screening, and address verification are different vendors entirely; do not let a green build here imply compliance.
- You need display names in many languages. This package gives codes; localized names come from elsewhere (e.g., CLDR-backed data).
- You require vendor support or an SLA. Low stars and effectively no dependents means unsupported; if that's a procurement blocker, vendor the code into the repo or fork it, and own the ISO data refresh.
- You need guaranteed currency/territory freshness (crypto assets, newly issued currencies) — verify the upstream update cadence first and plan a refresh mechanism.
How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)
For executives (one paragraph): This is a small, free (MIT) open-source library that validates country, language, and currency codes at the moment data enters our systems. It's a low-cost enabler for international expansion and a hygiene measure for customer, billing, and shipping data — preventing the downstream cleanup and reporting errors that come from free-text country and currency fields. Risk is low: it's a narrow, replaceable dependency with no license cost and no lock-in, and it does not replace any compliance or vendor-backed verification we already rely on.
For engineering (one paragraph): On Symfony, adopt the constraint wrapper directly. On Laravel, don't — depend on the underlying ronanguilloux/IsoCodes library and implement Laravel custom validation rules so the checks live in our existing validator stack instead of bridging in the Symfony Validator component. Keep the rules server-side and centralized (form requests / API resources), add tests for alpha-2 vs alpha-3 country codes and numeric currency codes, and treat the ISO dataset as a pinned, periodically refreshed input — budget a small recurring task to review upstream updates, and vendor the source if the project's maintenance signal is a concern.
For the PM owning the roadmap: Position this as a prerequisite task inside localization and data-quality epics, not a standalone initiative. Success looks like: zero invalid country/currency values reaching the data warehouse from self-serve flows, and new-market launches no longer blocked on building region lists.
