Validation Laravel Package

siriusphp/validation

SiriusPHP Validation is a standalone PHP validation library with a rich set of built-in rules, nested array support, custom rules and error messages, and a simple API for validating forms and structured input.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for the validation layer. This is a candidate "buy" (MIT, small surface area) for teams that need validation outside a full framework. The decision it most directly informs is whether to hand-roll rule engines or adopt an existing library.
  • Framework-coupling strategy. Because it is framework-agnostic, it forces an explicit choice: keep validation inside Illuminate\Validation (cheap, but couples domain rules to Laravel) or extract rules into a portable layer shared by a Laravel app, queue workers, CLI jobs, or a plain-PHP service.
  • Multi-runtime / polyglot-service products. If you run PHP services that aren't Laravel (legacy endpoints, batch importers, partner-facing SDKs), this gives you one rule vocabulary and one error-message catalog across them.
  • Boundary-validation standardization. Useful for deciding where validation lives in the architecture — request ingress, domain entities, or both — and for standardizing error payloads returned to API clients.
  • Maintenance-budget allocation. 158 stars, last release 2022-09-21, and a low quality score (1.83) are inputs to a "who owns this dependency" decision. Low stars and a single-maintainer profile are not disqualifying for a small library, but they do cap how much of your roadmap you tie to it.
  • Roadmap sequencing. Adoption is cheap; migration off it later is the real cost. This package is best treated as a reversible, low-blast-radius choice — not a platform commitment.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You have non-Laravel PHP code that must enforce the same rules as your Laravel app, and you want one library rather than duplicated logic.
  • You need nested/array/custom validators with configurable message templates, and the built-in framework validator is awkward for that specific shape.
  • You are on an older PHP runtime (7.x) and cannot take newer, PHP 8-only alternatives.
  • You want a small dependency footprint and a library you can read end-to-end in an afternoon.
  • You are prototyping and want an isolated adapter you can swap later without touching call sites.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are a Laravel shop and validation stays in the app. Illuminate\Validation is already installed, maintained, and richer (DB-aware unique/exists, FormRequest integration, localization). Adding this is redundant surface area.
  • You need active maintenance. No release since September 2022; assume no PHP 8.3/8.4 hardening and no security patching cadence. Test against your target runtime before committing.
  • You need typed/attribute-driven DTO validation. Symfony Validator (attributes, metadata, huge rule set) or Respect\Validation are better-supported fits; Laravel data-object libraries cover the in-framework case.
  • Your team is unfamiliar with it. 158 stars means thin community answers — the learning cost lands entirely on your engineers.
  • The validation rules are your product's core IP. Don't put crown-jewel logic behind an unmaintained dependency; implement it in-house behind a stable interface.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is a small, MIT-licensed PHP validation library. The interesting part is not the library — it's the architecture decision it enables: it lets us share validation rules across our Laravel app and our non-Laravel PHP services instead of duplicating and drifting. Cost to adopt is low and, critically, it sits behind our own interface, so replacing it later is a contained, ticket-sized job rather than a rewrite. Recommendation: approve it as an isolated component with a named owner and a review date — not as a platform standard.

For engineering: Adopt only behind a Validator adapter/port so no business code imports the package directly. Pin the version, add a smoke test on our target PHP runtime (last release predates current PHP 8.x point releases), and log a six-month review with two pre-agreed exits: Symfony Validator if we need richer rules and active maintenance, or Illuminate\Validation if we consolidate on Laravel. Expect no upstream security patches — budget a fork-and-patch option if the ruleset becomes load-bearing. If validation never leaves the Laravel app, skip this entirely and use the built-in validator.
