Nova Emoji Field Laravel Package

simbiosis/nova-emoji-field

A Laravel Nova field that adds an emoji picker to your resources, letting users select and store emoji values through a simple, native-looking input. Lightweight and easy to drop into any Nova form.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Operator-authored glyph selection: reaction sets, status badges, category icons, content tags, notification/email templates — anywhere an admin should pick an emoji instead of uploading an asset or typing a slug.
  • Roadmap sizing: this is a field-level dependency, not a platform bet. It belongs in a "polish / admin UX" lane, sized in hours-to-days, not as a themed initiative with a launch plan.
  • Build vs buy vs vendor: the honest framing is three-way. Depending on the package scores poorly (adoption and maintenance signals below), so the realistic options are fork the ~field-sized code into our app or build the equivalent ourselves. Its main value is as a working reference for the Nova field contract.
  • Data-model decision surfaced early: a picker makes "store raw Unicode in a text column" feel free. It isn't — it affects collation, full-text search, CSV exports, PDF rendering, and cross-client display. Use the picker's arrival as the forcing function to decide: raw Unicode, a slug + icon registry, or a curated enum.
  • Nova investment signal: adopting this only makes sense if Nova is the admin surface for the next 12+ months. If the admin panel is itself under review, this is a distraction.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You are already on Laravel Nova and have confirmed the field's Nova major-version compatibility against yours. Last release was 2022-10-19, which predates current Nova majors — verify the peer constraint before writing any code.
  • The picker is internal/admin-only, so a UI regression after a Nova upgrade is a cosmetic annoyance, not a customer-facing incident.
  • You want a short, readable example of the Nova field contract (PHP field class + Vue component) to fork and own.
  • You are prepared to vendor the code into your own repository and own the JavaScript, rather than track it as a Composer dependency.

Look elsewhere — or plan to build — when:

  • Maintenance signals are disqualifying for direct dependency: 1 star, 0 dependents, no release in roughly three years, single maintainer. Default assumption should be "unmaintained."
  • You need production-grade picker behavior: search, skin tones, frequently-used/recent, custom emoji sets, accessibility, i18n. A minimal field likely won't cover these; evaluate the underlying picker library (e.g. emoji-mart) directly instead of through this wrapper.
  • You have no in-house Vue capability and cannot absorb an upgrade break.
  • Your requirements point away from raw Unicode storage (curated icon set, or slug-plus-sprite), which makes the picker the wrong tool.
  • Nova itself is a candidate for replacement — don't build on a surface you may migrate off.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is a small, free, open-source component that lets operations staff drop emoji into admin forms — a convenience feature, not a system. The scope and cost are trivial. The catch is that it is effectively unmaintained (one maintainer, no release since 2022, negligible adoption), so we should not take it as a vendor dependency. We would copy the code into our own codebase once, own it, and move on. Size it as roughly half an engineer-day, with no ongoing licence or support cost.

For engineering: It's a standard Nova field — a PHP field class plus a Vue component wrapping an emoji picker. The value is the field contract and the pattern, not the code volume. Recommendation: fork it into the app, pin our own Nova version compatibility, and own the picker dependency directly so we control upgrades. Do not add a Composer dependency on a 1-star, three-year-stale package. Scope the work as an internal field with our own tests around serialization, validation (reject invalid sequences), and column collation — and settle the storage format (raw Unicode vs. slug) before the first migration.
