Getting Started

Scope note: this assessment covers the v2.0.0 line, whose headline change is "Prep for Laravel 10." v2 is a major bump, so treat it as a compatibility upgrade rather than a feature upgrade — verify specifics against the package's own UPGRADE/CHANGELOG before rolling out.

  • Look first at composer.json: the php constraint and every illuminate/* (or laravel/framework) constraint. That, not the source diff, is usually the whole story of a "prep for Laravel 10" major.
  • Read the changelog/upgrade notes for removed config keys, renamed publish tags, dropped helpers, and removed service-provider bindings. Majors are the standard window for those.
  • Confirm your app is actually on Laravel 10 before adopting. Laravel 10 requires PHP >= 8.1; if you're still on 8.0 or Laravel 8/9, stay on the 1.x line.
  • First use case: install into a throwaway Laravel 10 app, publish config and migrations, and run the package's own tests plus one real read and one real write against your database driver. Do this before touching your main application.

Implementation Patterns

  • Upgrade on a branch, alone. Bump the constraint in its own pull request with no feature work mixed in, so a rollback is a single revert.
  • Diagnose blockers with Composer, not guesswork. composer why-not vendor/package 2.0 tells you exactly which dependency is holding the old constraint in place.
  • Use --with-all-dependencies when a transitive dependency still pins the old Laravel range: composer require vendor/package:^2.0 --with-all-dependencies.
  • Extend the CI matrix. Add Laravel 10 with PHP 8.1–8.3. Keep a job pinned to your current Laravel version until migration is complete, so you can still ship patches.
  • Isolate the package behind a thin adapter. A small service class wrapping the package's public API means the next major touches one file instead of every controller.
  • Publish explicitly. php artisan vendor:publish --tag=<package-tag> rather than relying on auto-merged defaults; majors routinely change default values and tag names.
  • Downstream packages: widen constraints (^9.0|^10.0) rather than hard-pinning, and mirror the upstream release cadence so your consumers aren't stuck.

Gotchas and Tips

  • Laravel 10 majors are mostly constraint bumps, but the failure mode is silent: the package installs and then behaves differently because a default config value changed or a bindings registration was dropped.
  • Your published config will not pick up new keys. Package config is merged shallowly — an old published file keeps stale keys and misses additions. Diff your config/<package>.php against the package's shipped version after upgrading.
  • Clear caches after the bump: php artisan config:clear && php artisan optimize:clear. Stale cached config referencing a removed key is the most common silent breakage.
  • BindingResolutionException at boot points at the package's service provider, not your code. Check whether the provider is deferred or auto-discovered and what it binds in register().
  • Watch for abandoned transitive dependencies. Laravel 10 dropped PHP 8.0 and several packages were left behind; composer outdated --direct after the upgrade is a cheap early warning.
  • 1.x is now maintenance-only. If you can't move yet, pin ^1.0 and record the package's stated support window so the eventual jump isn't a surprise.
  • Extension points to re-verify after a major: published migrations (check for new columns/indexes you now need), facade accessors, and any Macroable or custom-driver registration your app added on top of the package.
  • Debugging tip: reproduce in the throwaway Laravel 10 app first. If it fails there with a clean install, it's a package constraint issue; if it only fails in your app, it's your config or a conflicting package.
