Message Bus Laravel Package

siberfx/message-bus

SiberFX Message Bus is a lightweight Laravel package for decoupling application workflows with a simple message bus. Dispatch messages to handlers via the service container, add middleware, and keep command and query logic organized and testable.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for background work. The README now names eight concrete scenarios (checkout side effects, live chat, long-running exports, unreliable third-party APIs, scheduled follow-ups, live dashboards, multi-tenancy, non-PHP consumers). That list is the most useful artifact in this release: it is effectively the vendor's own statement of scope, and it lets you map the package against your backlog before spending engineering time on a spike. Treat it as a claim to validate, not a capability list — this release added no code.
  • Feature-level fit for near-term roadmap items. If any planned epic involves durable side effects off the request path, retry-tolerant third-party calls, or long-running jobs that must survive a deploy, this package is a candidate to evaluate in that epic's design doc rather than a separate evaluation track.
  • Architecture decisions beyond a single service. Two of the listed use cases — multi-tenancy and non-PHP consumers — are platform-level, not library-level. If they hold up, adoption becomes an infrastructure decision (isolation model, cross-language contract) that belongs in architecture review, not a team-level dependency ticket.
  • Sequencing signal on runtime upgrades. The PHP 8.3+ / Laravel 13 floor is a hard gate. If your fleet is on an earlier Laravel line, adopting this package is contingent on an upgrade you may not have funded — useful input when prioritising that upgrade against other work.
  • Risk framing for a pre-1.0 dependency. v0.1.0 with documentation-only changes tells you the API is unsettled and the maintainer is still finding the product's story. That is a legitimate reason to prototype but not to commit a customer-facing path this quarter.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when all of the following hold:

  • Your runtime is already, or is funded to be, PHP 8.3+ and Laravel 13. This is non-negotiable and disqualifying otherwise.
  • You have at least one workflow that is genuinely long-lived or failure-prone — checkout side effects, exports measured in minutes, third-party APIs with poor reliability — where Laravel's built-in queue, scheduler, and retry primitives are producing bespoke glue code your team maintains.
  • Multi-tenant job isolation or non-PHP consumers are plausible within your planning horizon; those are the differentiators worth a spike.
  • You are evaluating, not committing: a timeboxed prototype behind a non-critical path is proportionate to a v0.1.0.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need production stability now. Pre-1.0 semver means breaking changes are permitted in minor versions. There is no stated release cadence, no LTS commitment, and no signal of production users in this release.
  • Your needs are already served. A single queue worker with standard retries and a scheduled command does not justify a dependency; the framework covers it.
  • Your runtime is behind. PHP 8.2 or Laravel 11/12 shops should note the interest and revisit, not plan around it.
  • Isolation is regulated. No evidence yet of how the multi-tenancy story is enforced. Do not assume compliance-grade separation until engineering verifies it.
  • You need vendor support. A single-maintainer pre-1.0 package is a bus-factor decision; if your org requires SLAs or indemnities, this is not the fit.

Evidence caveat: the use cases are documentation, unverified against behaviour. The assessment below is a scoping decision, not a technical validation.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives. A small open-source Laravel component has published a clearer statement of what it is for: moving slow, failure-prone, and scheduled work out of the user's request and into reliable background processing, including across multiple tenants and non-PHP systems. The upside is reduced custom plumbing and fewer checkout- or export-related incidents. The caveats are material: it is a 0.1.0 release, this version changed only documentation, it requires PHP 8.3 and Laravel 13, and there is no evidence of production adoption. Recommendation: fund a short, bounded technical spike inside an existing epic — no new headcount, no customer-facing commitment — and revisit with real findings. Cost of waiting is low; cost of adopting early on a revenue path is not.

For engineering. The release is documentation and CI badges only — zero behavioural change, so nothing here alters your risk posture. What it does give you is the maintainer's intended scope, which is worth an hour of mapping against our current workarounds for long-running jobs and retry logic. Before any adoption: confirm the PHP 8.3 / Laravel 13 floor against our upgrade plan, verify how tenant isolation is actually enforced rather than how it is described, check the public API surface for churn risk given pre-1.0 versioning, and confirm what "non-PHP consumers" concretely means for our stack. Prototype behind a flag on a single low-stakes workflow, with a documented exit path back to the framework's native queue and scheduler.
