Advanced Nova Media Library Laravel Package

shirshak55/advanced-nova-media-library

Laravel Nova field for advanced media management: upload images and files, crop and resize, generate responsive versions, organize multiple collections, reorder with drag and drop, and attach custom properties. A maintained fork of ebess/advanced-nova-media-library for richer Nova admin interfaces.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for admin media management. This package is glue code between Laravel Nova (the internal admin panel) and spatie/laravel-medialibrary (the file/attachment layer). The decision it informs is whether your team writes and maintains its own Nova media field or adopts a thin third-party adapter. For most teams the adapter wins: it is a UI concern, not a differentiator.
  • Internal tooling roadmap and timing. 3.0.0 is a compatibility release, not a feature release — it tracks the latest Nova and Spatie Media Library majors. That tells you the package is only viable for you if your Nova and medialibrary versions are in the same generation. Any Nova upgrade on your roadmap now has a coupled dependency to plan for, not just a version bump in composer.json.
  • Upgrade sequencing and blast radius. A major version bump driven by two upstreams means your upgrade path is Nova → medialibrary → this package, in that order, with a regression pass on every upload, crop, conversion, and deletion flow in the admin. Budget this as a small project, not a chore ticket.
  • Use cases it enables cheaply: multi-file and gallery fields, image cropping/editing in the admin, per-model attachment collections, responsive image conversions, and letting non-engineers manage media without a deploy. If any of those are on the roadmap, this is a "buy" by default.
  • Vendor and continuity exposure. The release note is one line long with no migration guide, no changelog detail, and typos intact. Treat that as a signal about maintenance maturity and set expectations accordingly when it lands on a critical admin surface.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when all of the following hold:

  • You run Laravel Nova and already use (or plan to use) spatie/laravel-medialibrary. Without Nova, this package is irrelevant — go straight to medialibrary plus a Filament/Inertia field or a custom form component.
  • Your Nova and medialibrary versions are on the generations this 3.0.0 release targets. Pin explicitly and verify before installing; a mismatch here is the single most likely failure mode.
  • Media management is internal, low-blast-radius admin tooling — back-office editors, not customer-facing upload pipelines where you need bespoke validation, virus scanning, or contractual SLA support.
  • You accept a thin-maintainer dependency on a surface your content team touches daily, and you have a smoke-test checklist for upload/crop/convert/delete that runs on every Nova upgrade.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are not on Nova, or you are actively migrating off it. Building media UI on a panel you plan to leave is sunk cost.
  • You need guaranteed support, SLAs, or a vendor relationship — this is a community package; the one-line release note is the evidence.
  • Your media flows are product-critical or high-volume (streaming, transcoding at scale, DAM requirements, rights management). Use a dedicated DAM or build the pipeline yourself; a Nova field wrapper is not that.
  • You are on an older Nova major and cannot upgrade soon. This release does not backport; staying put means staying on an unsupported branch. Confirm there is no security-relevant drift before deferring.
  • The package is unmaintained or you cannot read the diff. With no prior assessment on record and no repository data supplied, the first action is due diligence, not adoption: check commit recency, open issues, and whether 3.0.0 has a published upgrade guide.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives (one paragraph): We are evaluating a small open-source adapter that lets our internal admin panel manage images and files — galleries, cropping, thumbnails — without engineers doing it by hand. Its new 3.0.0 release is a compatibility update, not a new feature: it realigns the package with the current major versions of the two systems it plugs into. The upside is low cost and immediate productivity for content teams. The risk is that it is a community-maintained component with a single-line release note and no support contract, and it moves in lockstep with our admin panel's upgrade cycle. Recommendation: adopt for internal, non-critical admin media, with a version-pinning policy and a mandatory regression check whenever we upgrade the admin panel. Do not use it for customer-facing media pipelines.

To engineering (the ask):

  • Confirm Nova and spatie/laravel-medialibrary versions match 3.0.0's targets before any install; pin both plus this package in composer.json.
  • Read the actual 3.0.0 diff. The release note says "latest Nova and Spatie media library" — verify which majors, and check for renamed config keys, changed field props, and conversion-path or disk changes that silently affect existing uploads.
  • Write a smoke test covering upload, crop, conversion generation, replacement, and deletion, and wire it into the admin-upgrade runbook.
  • Establish an owner and a review date. If the package goes six months without a release while Nova or medialibrary ships a major, that is our trigger to reassess build-vs-buy.
  • Do not adopt until the repository has been reviewed for commit recency and open-issue volume — we currently have no prior assessment and no supporting data on file.
