Technical Evaluation

  • Architecture fit: shibomb/filament-todo is a Filament panel plugin that registers a native Resource (model, pages, policies, likely a migration) via a service provider and standard panel registration. It slots into Laravel apps already running Filament — no new runtime, queue, or infra dependency. If the target app is not on Filament, fit is poor; if it is, the plugin is effectively a thin CRUD module alongside existing resources.
  • Integration feasibility: Mechanically simple: composer require, register the plugin in the PanelProvider, publish and run any shipped migration, clear caches. Code surface is small and follows Filament conventions, so a Laravel/Filament developer can integrate in hours, not days. Main feasibility gate is Filament major-version compatibility (v2 vs v3) and PHP/Laravel constraint alignment in composer.json.
  • Technical risk: Low technical complexity, but elevated provenance and lifecycle risk. 3 stars, 0 dependents, last release 2023-10-04, single maintainer — no community validation, no visible security review, and likely no support for current Filament releases. Practical risks: (1) Filament API drift breaking pages/registrations on upgrade, (2) migrations touching production schema with unknown column/index design, (3) incomplete authorization (can users see everyone's todos?), (4) partial ja localization and thin test coverage.
  • Key questions: Which Filament/PHP/Laravel versions are supported? Does it ship and publish a migration, and what is the schema? How are permissions/policies and multi-tenancy handled? Is the Todo model extensible (assignee, due date, custom fields)? Is there a security disclosure path and any test suite? Who is the maintainer and what is the commit cadence? Is the data model acceptable as-is, or will we outgrow it in one quarter?

Integration Approach

  • Stack fit: Best fit is a Laravel app already on Filament v3 using Blade, Eloquent, and Laravel's lang loader. The plugin is presentation + light persistence; it does not replace Jira/Linear and should not be positioned as such in scope or stakeholder comms. Value is internal small-follow-up tracking, not project management.
  • Migration path: Greenfield install: require → register plugin → publish config/migrations → review schema → run migration in staging → seed a small dataset → QA CRUD/list/filters. Because the package is effectively frozen at Oct 2023, treat "upgrade path" as fork-if-needed: pin the version, monitor Filament upgrades, and plan to own a private fork when Filament's next major lands.
  • Compatibility: Validate composer.json constraints against our Filament, PHP, and Laravel versions before committing. Confirm DB dialect support (MySQL/Postgres/SQLite), check Filament page/registration APIs used, and confirm translation keys resolve under our locale fallback. Confirm whether views/lang are vendor-served vs published (published assets = fork risk).
  • Sequencing: (1) Non-prod spike against target Filament version, (2) schema and authorization review, (3) staging integration with real panel provider, (4) pilot with one small team, (5) decision gate: adopt / fork / build in-house. In parallel, keep a cheap exit plan: a hand-rolled Filament Resource is ~1–2 dev-days, so sunk cost if we abandon is low. Do not roll out broadly until the decision gate passes.

Operational Impact

  • Maintenance: Primary concern. Single-maintainer, ~1-year-stale package means we effectively own it on adoption. Mitigate by: pinning the version, vendoring or private-forking, minimizing local overrides, and adding a recurring dependency-review step. Budget ongoing “own-it” time, not just an integration spike.
  • Support: No vendor SLA, no paid support, MIT-only. Our team is the support tier. Document a runbook: how to fork, how to replace, who triages issues, and where the migration lives. Escalation is internal, not upstream.
  • Scaling: Runtime scaling is a non-issue — todo workloads are tiny. The scaling risk is organizational: if multiple teams/panels adopt it, we multiply dependency on an unmaintained package. Centralize ownership (one team/one repo) and standardize the version across panels.
  • Failure modes: Filament major upgrade breaks resource registration; migration conflict or unwanted schema in production; missing/incomplete i18n keys surfacing raw strings; weak authorization exposing todos cross-team; unpatched transitive dependency; package abandoned mid-adoption with no upstream fixes. Each should have a named owner and a pre-agreed response (rollback pin, fork, or replace with in-house Resource).
  • Ramp-up: Very low for Filament developers — hours to productive. TPM should gate adoption on: a short security review, a migration/schema review, an authorization/policy review, and a written exit plan (fork or replace). If those four pass, the package is a reasonable low-cost internal convenience; if any fail, skip it and build the small Resource in-house.
