Coinbase Laravel Package

shakurov/coinbase

Laravel package for integrating Coinbase Commerce cryptocurrency payments. It wraps the Coinbase Commerce API to create charges and checkouts, manage payment workflows, and handle webhook events, with configurable credentials and a simple facade-based setup for Laravel applications.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit. The package is a conventional Laravel wrapper—service provider, config publishing, facade—over the Coinbase Commerce REST API. It slots into a standard Laravel application with little ceremony and follows framework idioms (container binding, config-driven credentials). Architecturally, though, it is a thin convenience layer over an API that already ships an official PHP SDK, so the wrapper's real value is Laravel ergonomics, not capability. It is a boundary dependency, not a differentiator.

Integration feasibility. Low effort to stand up: composer require, publish config, set the API key, call the facade. The hard parts—webhook endpoint, signature verification, charge lifecycle state machine, reconciliation—are not solved by the wrapper and must be built regardless. Treat the package as an HTTP convenience, not a payments integration.

Technical risk. High relative to its signals. Score 1.04, 46 stars, zero dependents, and a last release of October 2023 indicate an effectively unmaintained, untested-in-the-wild dependency. A single-maintainer wrapper over a moving payments API will lag on API version pinning, webhook signature schemes, and Laravel 11/12 + PHP 8.2+ compatibility. It also sits on a sensitive surface: it holds API keys and participates in webhook trust decisions.

Key questions.

  • Does it wrap the official coinbase/coinbase-commerce-php SDK or call Guzzle directly, and is the API version pinned?
  • Which Laravel/PHP versions are declared in composer.json, and does it install cleanly on our target?
  • Does it implement webhook signature verification, or leave that to us?
  • Is there any test suite or CI, and who owns the repo if the maintainer stops?
  • Does it cover the API surface we need (charges, checkouts, events), or only a subset?

Integration Approach

Stack fit. Likely targets Laravel 8/9-era constraints. Validate composer.json against our framework and PHP versions before anything else; an install failure is the cheapest possible rejection. Fits a monolith or a modular Laravel service equally well.

Migration path. Do not let the facade leak into domain code. Define an internal CryptoPaymentGateway interface, implement a Coinbase adapter behind it, and reference the package only inside that adapter. This keeps the official SDK, raw HTTP, or a different processor as drop-in alternatives and makes the eventual fork-or-replace decision a one-file change.

Compatibility. Check PSR-18/Guzzle version alignment, Coinbase API version behavior, and whether webhook verification depends on an abandoned crypto library. Confirm behavior against a Coinbase Commerce sandbox key, not just mocks.

Sequencing.

  1. Read the source (it is small) and diff its behavior against the official SDK.
  2. Sandbox POC: create a charge, confirm redirect flow, receive a webhook.
  3. Contract tests against the sandbox for charge creation, expiry, and webhook signature.
  4. Build the adapter interface plus feature flag.
  5. Staging validation with webhook replay.
  6. Production canary behind the flag with a kill switch to the official SDK.

Operational Impact

Maintenance. Assume we own it. With a stale release cadence, security patches and API updates arrive late or never; budget for a fork and an internal patch process, or plan to retire the wrapper within two quarters. Either way, someone must be named as owner.

Support. There is no vendor support and effectively no community—zero dependents means no downstream bug reports to learn from. Internal runbooks and an on-call escalation path are mandatory before production.

Scaling. The wrapper adds negligible overhead; scale is governed by Coinbase Commerce rate limits, webhook throughput, and our own idempotency handling. Webhook processing must be queued and retried, with idempotency keys on charge creation to avoid duplicate state.

Failure modes.

  • API breaking changes absorbed silently by a stale wrapper.
  • Webhook signature verification failing after an upstream scheme change, causing missed payments.
  • Unhandled 429s and timeouts producing orphaned charges.
  • Config/key drift with no health check.
  • Missing idempotency leading to duplicate or inconsistent charge records.
  • Partial payment states (underpayment, overpayment, expiry) that the wrapper does not model.

Ramp-up. Low for a Laravel developer to call the facade—hours. Moderate for the crypto payments domain itself: confirmation states, expiry windows, refunds, and reconciliation are outside the wrapper's scope and represent the bulk of the real work. Plan for domain ramp-up, not package ramp-up.
