Laravel Sens Laravel Package

seungmun/laravel-sens

Integrate NHN Cloud SENS with Laravel to send SMS, LMS, MMS, and KakaoTalk AlimTalk/FriendTalk messages. Configure credentials and sender numbers, then send directly or via Laravel notifications with a clean, simple API. Ideal for reliable transactional and promotional messaging.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Korea-market notifications without a custom integration project. The package wires Naver Cloud Platform's SENS (Simple & Easy Notification Service) into Laravel's native Notification system, so OTP/verification codes, order and payment confirmations, shipping updates, and account-recovery messages become a configuration task rather than a sprints-long build. This is what makes a Korea launch or a Korean-language notification surface feasible for a small team.
  • Build vs. buy: buy the adapter, own the policy. The wrapper is thin; the expensive parts of the decision are the things a PM actually owns — sender-number pre-registration (발신번호 사전등록), opt-in capture and the 080 opt-out line for advertising messages, message templates, per-message cost, and delivery-report handling. Adopting this package lets engineering spend its time on those product requirements instead of HTTP plumbing against the SENS API.
  • Channel-agnostic product code. Because it plugs into Notification::send() via a channel class, notification logic stays independent of the vendor. That preserves optionality: you can pilot SENS for Korea and keep Twilio, AWS SNS, or a domestic broker (Solapi, Aligo, NHN Cloud) behind the same notification classes, or route SMS to SENS and KakaoTalk channels elsewhere. Treat that swappability as a deliberate architectural requirement, not an accident.
  • Roadmap gating for localization. If Korea is on the roadmap within two quarters, this is a legitimate spike candidate: it lets you prototype the full send → deliver → report loop and get real cost-per-message and latency numbers in days, which is the data you need to size the notification budget and choose a vendor contract.
  • Use cases it fits well: transactional-only messaging at low-to-moderate volume, OTP on a critical path where you will build a fallback anyway, and internal/admin alerting. Poor fits are high-volume marketing campaigns, rich KakaoTalk AlimTalk template management, and anything needing sophisticated retry, scheduling, or delivery analytics out of the box.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • The organization has chosen, or is actively evaluating, Naver Cloud Platform as its Korean cloud/SMS vendor — SENS is the native path there, and using NCP for compute plus SENS keeps billing, IAM, and network egress consolidated.
  • The application is Laravel (8/9-era) and already uses the Notification subsystem; the marginal integration cost is genuinely low.
  • You need SMS/LMS/MMS-style transactional messaging for Korean numbers and can live with plain message bodies rather than managed KakaoTalk templates.
  • You are running a time-boxed spike and can accept a dependency you may later fork — 39 stars and a last release of August 2022 means roughly no active maintainership, so a PM should fund a "vendor it or fork it" line item rather than assume upstream fixes.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are not on NCP. The package is a wrapper around one vendor's API; the value collapses if you are standardized on AWS, Twilio, or another Korean broker.
  • You need managed KakaoTalk AlimTalk/FriendTalk template workflows, campaign scheduling, send-time optimization, or audience segmentation — that is a different product category (a messaging platform, not a channel adapter).
  • You need vendor-supported SLAs. A single-maintainer MIT package is fine as an internal fork, not as a component you cite in a customer-facing reliability commitment without owning the code.
  • Your team cannot absorb Laravel version churn on a stale package, or you need PHP 8.2+/Laravel 10+ support that the 2022 release predates. Verify installability against your current framework before committing to a plan that depends on it.
  • Compliance or data-residency reviews require a documented vendor DPA. The MIT license covers the code, not the data flow to NCP — that is a separate procurement conversation.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, MIT-licensed adapter that lets our Laravel application send Korean SMS through Naver Cloud Platform using code we already have rather than a new integration project. It shortens the path to a Korea-capable notification experience — OTP, order confirmations, delivery updates — to a matter of configuration plus the compliance work we have to do regardless (sender registration, opt-in, opt-out). It is a low-cost, reversible decision: the cost is dominated by the messaging fees and the compliance process, not by this code. The caveat is maintenance — the library has not shipped a release since mid-2022 and has a small user base — so I would frame approval as "adopt and vendor," meaning we take a copy we control. Total exposure is a few engineer-days, and it gives us concrete per-message cost and latency data before we sign any vendor commitment.

To engineering: It is a Laravel notification channel over the NCP SENS API — one composer require, credentials and a registered sender number in config, and then standard Notification classes with a SENS channel. Keep it behind our own notification interface so the vendor is swappable, pin the version, and plan to fork and vendor the source since upstream is quiet. Build the things the package will not give us: OTP fallback on failure, delivery-result persistence for support and audit, and templating in our own layer so message copy is a product change, not a deploy. Flag framework compatibility early — the last release predates recent Laravel majors, so confirm it installs cleanly or budget the small patch to bring it forward.
