Sylius Static Contexts Bundle Laravel Package

setono/sylius-static-contexts-bundle

Technical Evaluation

This release is a dependency and tooling major for setono/sylius-static-contexts-bundle, a Sylius/Symfony bundle that provides static channel and locale context services. From a TPM perspective, the most important finding is that this is not a Laravel-native package. Its architecture assumes Symfony DI, bundle registration, service tags/priorities, and Sylius channel/locale services. It is a good fit for Sylius-based PHP services that need deterministic channel/locale context in tests, CLI commands, or background workflows. It is a poor fit for a Laravel application unless we accept an unsupported custom bridge, which I would not recommend.

Integration feasibility is high for applications already on the required platform: PHP 8.2+, Symfony 6.4/7.4, Sylius v2, and symfony/service-contracts ^3.0. The public API (StaticChannelContext, StaticLocaleContext) is unchanged, and the migration guide explicitly states no code changes are needed for consumers using that API. The main upgrade cost is therefore platform alignment, not bundle code changes. Applications still on PHP 8.1, Symfony 5.4, or Sylius v1 must either remain on the 1.x branch or complete a broader platform upgrade before adopting v2.

Technical risk is moderate but mostly concentrated in dependency floors and ecosystem compatibility. Raising PHP, Symfony, Sylius, and service-contracts minimums can cascade into composer conflicts and force unrelated upgrades. Internal changes such as XML-to-PHP service configuration, PHPStan adoption, PHPUnit 11, and Rector v2 are low runtime risk for consumers but indicate the package is actively modernized. The v1/v2 split creates a support-matrix risk if our estate contains mixed Sylius versions. Key questions: Which applications are actually Sylius/Symfony versus Laravel? Do any remain on Sylius v1 or PHP 8.1? What is our support window for Sylius v2 and Symfony 7.4? Do we rely on XML service overrides or custom DI configuration? Is there a genuine need for this bundle outside Sylius, or should Laravel apps use native request-scoped context instead?

Integration Approach

Stack fit should be assessed per application, not estate-wide. For Sylius v2 applications on Symfony 6.4/7.4 and PHP 8.2+, this bundle fits cleanly: register the bundle, rely on the provided context services, and validate tag priorities and service registration through container tests. For Laravel applications, I would explicitly exclude this package from scope. Laravel’s container, middleware, and scoped-binding patterns do not map to Symfony bundle extension semantics without a custom adapter, and maintaining that adapter would create disproportionate risk for a small context utility.

The migration path is straightforward for compliant Sylius apps: confirm PHP, Symfony, and Sylius versions; update composer constraints to setono/sylius-static-contexts-bundle:^2.0; run the application test suite; add or verify tests around reset() and null-unsetting; and validate DI extension behavior. No public API code changes should be required. For non-compliant apps, pin to ^1.0, record the technical debt, and schedule the platform upgrade separately. Do not mix v1 and v2 assumptions in shared libraries without clear compatibility guards.

Compatibility is well defined by the changelog: v2 targets PHP 8.2/8.3/8.4, Symfony ~6.4/~7.4, Sylius v2, and service-contracts ^3.0. The main sequencing constraint is that platform upgrades must precede the bundle upgrade. I would sequence as follows: classify apps by framework; audit Sylius/PHP/Symfony versions; upgrade platform dependencies first; bump the bundle; run container compilation and context lifecycle tests; then roll out through staging before production. Laravel apps should remain on native Laravel patterns and be excluded from this migration.

Operational Impact

Maintenance impact is favorable for teams already on Sylius v2. The package has improved its own quality gates with PHPStan level 9, PHPUnit 11, Rector v2, and updated CI, which should reduce defect risk over time. Consumer maintenance is minimal because the public API is stable. The main ongoing burden is tracking the Sylius v2 and Symfony 7.4 support matrix and avoiding branch drift if part of the estate remains on v1.

Support impact depends on our platform lifecycle. v2 is tied to Sylius v2 and modern Symfony, so support for legacy Sylius v1 applications will require the 1.x branch and a clear internal exception process. I would not position this package as generally supported for Laravel. Scaling impact is negligible: the bundle provides lightweight context services and compile-time DI configuration; it is not a runtime bottleneck. Failure modes are more likely to be composer dependency conflicts, container compilation errors from service overrides or tag-priority conflicts, and context leakage in long-running workers if reset() is not called. The new tests for reset and null-unsetting are therefore operationally relevant. Ramp-up is low for Symfony/Sylius teams familiar with bundles and DI tags, but medium for Laravel-only teams because the concepts do not transfer cleanly. The README and requirements documentation improve onboarding, but teams still need to understand context lifecycle and branch support before rollout.
