Fpdi Tcpdf Laravel Package

setasign/fpdi-tcpdf

Lightweight bridge between FPDI and TCPDF that lets PHP developers import pages from existing PDF files directly into new TCPDF documents. Handy for merging files, adding stamps or watermarks, reordering pages, and assembling reports without rebuilding layouts from scratch.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • setasign/fpdi-tcpdf is a Composer metapackage: it ships no PHP source, no service provider, no config, no facade. Its entire payload is a composer.json that pins setasign/fpdi and tecnickcom/tcpdf to a mutually compatible version pair.
  • The real capability lives in the two underlying libraries. FPDI 2.x already bundles the TCPDF bridge class (setasign\Fpdi\Tcpdf\Fpdi), so in a modern tree this package is strictly redundant — Composer resolves the same constraint graph from the direct dependencies.
  • Fit inside Laravel is therefore "compatible but valueless." It would sit as a leaf dependency beside barryvdh/laravel-dompdf, laravel-snappy, or a hand-rolled TCPDF service class. It has no Laravel coupling to evaluate.
  • The one historical justification — shielding developers from FPDI/TCPDF version-matrix pain — disappeared once FPDI 2.x stabilized and Composer's solver improved.

Integration feasibility

  • Installation is a single composer require with no configuration surface. There is nothing to wire into config/app.php or the container.
  • Practical integration effort is dominated by the PDF work itself: template authoring, page import, coordinate/rotation handling, output streaming. The package contributes none of that.

Technical risk

  • Abandoned and archived (last release 2020-02-19). No maintainer, no CVE response, no PHP 8.x fixes.
  • Transitive pinning is the real hazard. The metapackage's frozen constraints can hold the project on outdated TCPDF/FPDI builds, blocking security patches and conflicting with newer Composer requirements. Because TCPDF parses untrusted PDFs and emits documents, stale versions carry meaningful exposure (memory exhaustion, file-inclusion and XSS classes of issue historically reported against PDF toolchains).
  • False sense of maintenance. Teams often assume a package with a vendor name implies support; here the vendor explicitly disclaims it.
  • Low blast radius, high noise. Removing it later is easy, but leaving it in creates unexplained lockfile drift and audit findings.

Key questions

  1. What is the actual PDF requirement — merging, template stamping, watermarking, PDF/A, or digital signatures?
  2. Which Laravel and PHP versions are in scope (8.1/8.2/8.3), and does the current lockfile resolve?
  3. Are any source PDFs user-supplied or untrusted?
  4. Is PDF/A or signature compliance required (TCPDF has partial support; FPDI import can break conformance)?
  5. What document volumes and page sizes must be supported in a single request?
  6. Is commercial support (Setasign offers it for FPDI) a procurement requirement?

Integration Approach

Stack fit Replace the metapackage with direct dependencies. The API surface is identical, so application code does not change.

Concern Abandoned metapackage Recommended
Declared dependency setasign/fpdi-tcpdf (frozen) setasign/fpdi: ^2.6 + tecnickcom/tcpdf: ^6.7
Code source none same classes (setasign\Fpdi\Tcpdf\Fpdi)
Patch cadence none upstream releases
PHP 8.x unverified supported

Migration path

  1. Inventory actual usage (grep for Fpdi, TCPDF, fpdi-tcpdf); confirm whether the metapackage is even referenced directly or only pulled transitively.
  2. Remove setasign/fpdi-tcpdf from composer.json; add setasign/fpdi and tecnickcom/tcpdf at current stable constraints.
  3. composer update setasign/fpdi tecnickcom/tcpdf --with-dependencies; verify no other package depended on the metapackage's exact pins.
  4. Run the existing PDF paths — class names and namespaces are unchanged, so this is a dependency swap, not a code migration.
  5. Delete any stale lockfile entries and re-run composer audit.

Compatibility

  • PHP 8.1+ requires a recent TCPDF (6.6+) to avoid dynamic-property deprecations; validate font caches and tmp write paths under the container user.
  • FPDI cannot import encrypted or some compressed-object PDFs; confirm source templates are plain.
  • If PDF/A or signing is needed, evaluate whether TCPDF alone suffices or a dedicated library is warranted before committing.

Sequencing Treat as a low-effort, low-risk cleanup that should precede any new PDF feature work. Do the swap first, establish a golden-file regression suite over representative documents (structural assertions, not byte comparison), then build features on the upgraded baseline.

Operational Impact

Maintenance Since the package is code-free, "maintaining" it is trivial — but it is also unfixable. The maintenance burden transfers entirely to the underlying libraries, which is exactly where you want it. Direct dependencies give you a normal patch cadence; the metapackage gives you none.

Support Community-only. No vendor SLA, no security advisories, no response to issues. Setasign sells commercial support for FPDI specifically; if PDF correctness is business-critical (invoices, contracts, regulatory filings), budget for it rather than relying on an archived wrapper.

Scaling

  • TCPDF builds documents fully in memory. Large page counts, high-resolution images, or embedded fonts will hit memory_limit before CPU becomes the constraint. Plan for 256–512 MB workers and enforce page/size caps.
  • PDF generation is synchronous CPU work; run it on queued jobs, not in the request cycle, and set explicit timeouts.
  • Watch temp-directory growth — TCPDF and FPDI both write intermediates; container ephemeral storage needs cleanup.

Failure modes

  • Composer resolution failure or silent downgrade of unrelated packages due to frozen pins.
  • PHP 8 deprecation notices promoted to exceptions in strict error handlers.
  • Memory exhaustion on oversized or image-heavy inputs.
  • Exceptions on encrypted, malformed, or XFA-containing PDFs — surface these as validation errors, not 500s.
  • Font subsetting/cache corruption after container rebuilds (non-writable vendor or cache paths).
  • Output corruption from page-rotation or MediaBox mismatches when stamping templates.

Ramp-up Low. Any PHP developer can use the FPDI/TCPDF API within a day; the real learning curve is PDF-domain knowledge — coordinate systems, template design constraints, font embedding, and conformance requirements. Budget design time for templates, not for the library.

Recommendation: Do not adopt. Drop the metapackage and depend on setasign/fpdi and tecnickcom/tcpdf directly. The change is mechanical, removes an unmaintained dependency from the audit surface, and restores your ability to take security patches — which is the only durable value on offer here.
