Laravel Media Model Laravel Package

sertxudeveloper/laravel-media-model

Laravel Media Model adds straightforward media handling to Eloquent models, letting you attach images and files to records through a dedicated Media model and reusable relationships. Store uploads and retrieve associated media alongside your model data.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature delivery: media attachments without custom plumbing. laravel-media-model provides a polymorphic media-to-model relationship (avatars, galleries, documents, product images) so product teams can ship user profiles, catalogs, listing photos, and CMS assets without designing and maintaining their own attachment tables, storage paths, and cleanup logic.
  • Platform roadmap: Laravel 11 upgrade. v1.3.0 adds Laravel 11.x support. This is the only product-relevant change in the release — it removes the package as a blocker on a framework upgrade, which matters because Laravel 10 is past its bug-fix window and approaching end of security support. If your roadmap has a Laravel 11 migration in the next two quarters, this release is what makes the dependency viable to keep.
  • Build vs. buy: buy (adopt the package). The alternative is 1–3 sprints of internal work to build polymorphic media relations, disk abstraction, deletion/orphan handling, and the associated tests — plus permanent ownership. At this scope, adopting is the cheaper path; the package is a thin, conventional Eloquent extension rather than a platform commitment.
  • Use cases that justify adoption: multi-model media (same image attached to a user and a post), per-model collections (thumbnail vs. original), and any MVP where "upload a file and show it" is table stakes rather than differentiation.
  • Decision it does not support: choosing a long-term digital asset management strategy. This package stores and relates files; it does not give you a transformation pipeline, CDN, moderation, or rights management at scale.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • You are on Laravel 10 or 11 (v1.3.0 makes 11 a supported target; anything older is unverified by the maintainer).
  • Your need is straightforward polymorphic attachment: a model has media, media belongs to a model, files live on a Laravel disk.
  • You want a small, readable dependency you could fork or replace in a day if the maintainer disappears.
  • Your team is small and the media layer is undifferentiated infrastructure, not product surface.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need image conversions, responsive srcsets, or on-the-fly transformations at scale — a mature media library (e.g. Spatie's laravel-medialibrary) or a hosted service (Cloudinary, imgix, S3 + Lambda) is a better fit.
  • You need DAM capabilities: search, tagging at scale, versioning, approval workflows, rights management.
  • You require vendor assurance: this is a single-maintainer package. v1.3.0's changelog is dominated by Dependabot bumps and CI housekeeping, which is normal for a small project but is also a signal of maintenance depth. If procurement needs an SLA or a security-response commitment, this will not clear review.
  • You are pre-Laravel-10 or on a non-Laravel PHP stack — the value proposition is the Eloquent integration, and it evaporates outside it.

Migration note: because the package is thin, the exit cost is low. Treat that as the primary risk mitigation: adopt, but keep media access behind your own repository/service layer so a future swap to a heavier library touches one class, not every controller.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (one paragraph): We are standardizing on a small open-source Laravel package for attaching images and files to application records, replacing what would otherwise be several weeks of custom engineering plus ongoing maintenance. The latest release adds Laravel 11 support, which keeps our framework upgrade path clear and means this dependency will not hold up the platform refresh. Cost is zero in licensing; total exposure is low because the package is small enough to replace in days if needed. Recommendation: adopt for the current milestone, with the media layer isolated so we retain the option to move to a commercial asset platform if requirements grow.

For engineering:

  • v1.3.0 = Laravel 11 compatibility plus CI/dependency housekeeping. No breaking changes, no API changes, no deprecations — upgrading from v1.2.0 is a version bump in composer.json and a regression run on any media-touching feature.
  • Treat Laravel 11 as the tested ceiling. Do not assume forward compatibility with 12.x until the maintainer publishes support; plan a spike before that upgrade.
  • Wrap the package in our own MediaService/repository boundary. This is the single most valuable engineering decision here — it caps switching cost and keeps the dependency from leaking into domain code.
  • Pin the version, and add a scheduled check on the upstream repo. With one maintainer and Dependabot-driven releases, we want early warning if activity stops before we have critical mass of media in production.
  • Budget: roughly half a day to integrate, plus a day of test coverage on upload, replace, and delete/orphan paths — those are the failure modes that reach users.
