Component Array Writer Laravel Package

serendipity_hq/component-array-writer

Serendipity HQ's component-array-writer is a lightweight PHP utility for exporting arrays into clean, readable PHP files. It simplifies generating configuration, data dumps, and component registries in Laravel or any PHP project, with simple, dependable, human-friendly output.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Framing the "array as file" question. This package only matters if a feature needs to persist PHP arrays as files (<?php return [...]) rather than hold them in memory. That is a real decision for config-generation workflows: installer/bootstrap wizards, per-tenant settings export, admin UI writing to config/*.php, and package scaffolding. It is the wrong tool for in-request array manipulation.
  • Build vs. buy. At 1 star and 0 dependents, the honest decision this informs is not "adopt," but "do we need this capability, and is it worth a Composer entry?" The capability is occasionally useful; the dependency is not. Treat the repo as a reference implementation under MIT.
  • Roadmap weight: negligible. Low-leverage plumbing. If it appears in a plan, it belongs inside a larger feature's implementation notes, never as a delivery line item, and it will never be a differentiator.
  • Use cases worth validating before committing: round-tripping an admin settings form to a PHP config file; generating test fixtures as readable PHP arrays; emitting generated code where raw var_export() output is unreadable. If none of these is on the roadmap, the package is out of scope by default.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You must read arbitrary PHP array files (not just include them safely) and write them back, and formatting quality matters.
  • You are generating PHP config or code and want more readable output than var_export().
  • You are in a legacy, non-Laravel PHP codebase without Arr/Config helpers.
  • You have read the source (it is small) and are comfortable forking or vendoring it.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You're on Laravel — config(), Config::set(), Arr::get/set/dot, and Illuminate\Support\Arr cover nearly all of this. Prefer first-party.
  • You need robust serialization — use symfony/var-exporter; for AST-level fidelity, nikic/php-parser.
  • Humans don't need to read the file in git — use JSON, YAML, or the database. PHP-file emission earns its keep only when reviewers diff it.
  • Output must be format-stable — verify against PHP-CS-Fixer before shipping; unvetted emitters produce noisy diffs.
  • You need an upgrade/security path — zero dependents and one star mean no ecosystem signal. Prefer copy-under-MIT over a dependency.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

Executives: This is a micro-utility, not a platform decision. It does not unlock a capability we lack, remove meaningful cost, or affect roadmap timing. Recommendation: do not add it as a dependency. If the need appears, we implement it in-house in under a day or use Symfony's maintained equivalent. No budget ask, no schedule impact — it is logged as "considered and rejected" so it does not resurface in future build-vs-buy reviews.

Engineering: The package is a thin read/write layer for <?php return [...] files. It is only relevant when config files are a generated artifact. In Laravel we already have config(), Arr, and Config::set for reads/mutation, and should use var_export() plus CS-Fixer or symfony/var-exporter for emission. With one star and no dependents there is no security or upgrade path; copying the MIT-licensed source is lower risk than a Composer entry. If we do adopt it, pin the version, wrap it behind an internal interface, and add a round-trip test against our real config fixtures before it touches production paths.
