Sdk Laravel Package

sentry/sdk

Official Sentry SDK for PHP. Capture errors, exceptions, and performance traces from Laravel, Symfony, or plain PHP apps, with breadcrumbs, stack traces, and release tracking to find and fix issues faster.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy on error monitoring. The real decision is whether to invest in in-house logging, alerting, and exception aggregation or pay for Sentry. This package doesn't make that call — it just removes integration friction once the call is made.
  • Timing of observability investment on the roadmap. Instrumentation typically needs to land before a public launch, an enterprise/SLA commitment, or a scale milestone, because you cannot credibly promise uptime you cannot measure.
  • Prioritizing reliability work with evidence. Exception volume, crash-free session rates, and release health give you a defensible basis for "fix the regression" vs. "ship the feature" — instead of arguing from anecdote.
  • Concrete use cases it enables: capturing unhandled exceptions in queue workers and scheduled jobs (where Laravel's default file logging is weakest), tagging releases and commits so you can attribute a spike to a deploy, and breadcrumb trails that cut support triage time.
  • What it is not: a product feature. No user-facing surface, no revenue lever, no growth experiment. Frame it as cost-of-downtime insurance and scope it accordingly — small, boring, and worth having before you need it.

When to Consider This Package

  • Rarely, and almost never directly. sentry/sdk is a metapackage: it exists to pull sentry/sentry plus a recommended HTTP client so the transport works out of the box. On Laravel, install sentry/sentry-laravel and let this arrive transitively. Adding it by hand is redundant.
  • Only if you're building a non-Laravel PHP service or a shared internal library where you want a stable dependency target that doesn't hard-pin Guzzle versus curl.
  • Do your diligence on the health signals. 327 stars, last release December 2023, and zero recorded dependents. Metapackages are quiet by design — a pinned constraint set doesn't need frequent releases — but confirm it still resolves against your PHP version and existing HTTP client before assuming it's maintained. Don't read vendor health from this repo; read it from sentry/sentry-laravel.
  • Look elsewhere if you need framework integration (Laravel or Symfony bundles), you're already standardized on another APM vendor, or your team has no on-call ownership — tooling without a responder is just an invoice.
  • Look elsewhere if your dependency graph is tight. A metapackage that asserts an HTTP client choice can collide with an existing Guzzle or PHP version pin, and you'll burn more time in composer.lock than you save on error tracking.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

Executives: A free (MIT), low-risk line item that shortens time-to-diagnosis when production breaks. It doesn't generate revenue; it caps the cost of the incidents that interrupt revenue. The material spend is the Sentry subscription and the on-call time to act on alerts — not this package.

Engineering: This is a thin dependency wrapper. Don't add it by hand in a Laravel app; sentry/sentry-laravel already brings it in. Treat it as infrastructure, not a feature — no product requirements, no rollout plan, just a constraint resolution to verify in CI before merge.

My recommendation: Approve the observability budget on the strength of Sentry's ecosystem and the framework integration, not on this package's metrics. The low star count and 2023 release date are expected for a metapackage, but that means activity here is not a usable proxy for vendor health — track that against sentry/sentry-laravel and your own time-to-resolution numbers instead.
