scandio/troba
Troba is a lightweight Laravel package from Scandio for adding database-backed search to Eloquent models. It provides a simple searchable trait and query helpers so you can find records without an external search service, keeping setup minimal and search logic close to your models.
Consider it only when all of the following hold:
Look elsewhere when any of the following is true:
For executives: Troba is a small, unmaintained PHP persistence library. It is not a strategic dependency and should not become one. The risk is not that it breaks today — thin PDO wrappers tend to be stable — but that it pins the application to an unsupported PHP version with no security patch path, and that the knowledge to maintain it lives with a very small number of people. Treat it as a contained liability: do not expand its footprint, budget a bounded migration when the application next needs platform work, and avoid a rewrite purely for its sake. The cost of exit is modest precisely because it is thin; the cost of staying grows with every release cycle.
For engineering: Do not adopt for new work. If you own a service on Troba, wrap it behind your own repository interfaces now so the swap is mechanical later, keep the vendored source under review, and log it as a known dependency risk. Target Doctrine DBAL (if you want to keep explicit SQL) or Eloquent/Doctrine ORM (if you want relationships and migrations) at the next natural upgrade boundary — not as a standalone project. Expect the migration to be a persistence-layer refactor, not an application rewrite, provided the wrapping happens first.
