Nova Images Laravel Package

sbing/nova-images

sbing/nova-images is a Laravel Nova package for uploading and managing images on your resources, with support for multiple image uploads, previews, and configurable storage. It simplifies adding image fields and handling file storage in Nova admin panels.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Admin experience investment: Whether to upgrade the content team's image workflow inside Nova (cropping, multiple renditions, focal-point selection, WebP/derivative generation) or accept Nova's stock Image field, which handles upload/display but leaves responsive variants and art-direction cropping to custom code.
  • Build vs. buy (micro-scale): A pre-built Nova image field is a cheap way to avoid a sprint of custom field + upload-pipeline work. The decision hinges on whether the package's feature surface actually matches your media requirements or just re-skins the default field.
  • Roadmap sequencing: If a media library / DAM is on the 2–4 quarter horizon, this is a bridge, not a foundation. Decide explicitly whether it's throwaway scaffolding or a dependency you'll inherit.
  • Use cases to scope against: editorial CMS image slots, product/catalog imagery with per-channel crops, marketing asset review, and any admin surface where non-technical staff upload images and expect them to "just look right."
  • Risk appetite calibration: With zero stars, zero dependents, and no ecosystem signal, this is a trial-tier dependency at best. It should not appear in an architecture decision record as a committed choice without a spike behind it.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when all of the following hold:

  • Your admin layer is Laravel Nova, and the version alignment is verified (Nova major version, PHP version, Laravel version) — Nova's field API has broken across majors, and unmaintained fields are the most common upgrade casualty.
  • You have a specific gap the stock Image field doesn't close (crop presets, generated sizes, focal points) and the package demonstrably closes it.
  • You're comfortable pinning a version and forking if needed — this is a vendored-code relationship, not a community-supported one.
  • Storage drivers you rely on (local, S3-compatible) are exercised in your spike, including deletion and re-upload behavior.

Look elsewhere when:

  • Adoption signals matter to your org. Zero stars and zero dependents means no peer review, no issue history to mine, and no bus factor beyond the original author. For anything customer-facing or long-lived, prefer Spatie Media Library + a thin custom Nova field, or Nova's first-party fields.
  • You need a genuine media library (taxonomies, collections, conversions, CDN integration) rather than a form field.
  • You require tests, CI, a changelog, or a security disclosure path — verify these exist before adopting; absence is disqualifying for regulated environments.
  • Your team can't absorb maintenance. A one-file Nova field is often cheaper to write than to vet, fork, and own.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (one paragraph): This is a small, single-purpose add-on for our Laravel admin panel that improves how staff upload and manage images. It's low-cost to trial and doesn't touch the customer-facing product, but it has effectively no external adoption — no other companies are known to use it — so we should treat it as an experiment, not a platform decision. Recommendation: timeboxed spike, with a clear fallback to Nova's built-in image field or a well-maintained alternative.

For engineering (bullets):

  • Scope: narrow — a Nova image field. Evaluate the actual feature delta against Nova's stock field before writing any code; if the delta is small, build the field in-house and keep ownership.
  • Compatibility is the gating risk: confirm Nova major version, PHP/Laravel constraints, and that it survives an upgrade path. Unmaintained Nova fields break silently on Nova upgrades.
  • Isolation: wrap it behind our own field class or a thin adapter so it can be swapped without touching resource definitions. No direct references in business logic.
  • Due diligence checklist: tests present? CI? recent commits? license declared? issue tracker responsive? storage-driver behavior on S3 (upload, replace, delete, orphaned files)?
  • Exit criteria for the spike: works end-to-end on our storage driver, no orphaned files on delete, acceptable admin UX for the content team, and a one-day path to replace it if abandoned.
  • Decision gate: promote only if the spike passes and the package is either forked into our org or the feature need is stable enough that rewriting later is cheap.
