Smart Media Library Laravel Package

sandeep816/smart-media-library

A Laravel media library for uploading, storing, and managing images and files through an Eloquent-friendly API. Attach media to models, generate thumbnails and conversions, and serve optimized assets from local or cloud storage.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for media management. This package removes a recurring "we need a media library" build item from the roadmap: uploads, storage abstraction, conversions, attachments, and a picker UI are all in scope. The decision it enables is whether media handling is core IP (build) or table stakes (adopt and customize).
  • Accelerating Filament-based admin surfaces. Any roadmap item that needs asset management behind an admin panel — CMS pages, product catalogs, blog posts, user avatars, document libraries — can be scoped with the bundled Media Library views and MediaPicker rather than a bespoke CRUD screen. This directly compresses estimates on content-editing features.
  • Feature scoping on attachment semantics. Polymorphic attachments and single/multi/reorderable selection mean the team can commit to requirements like "images belong to many records" or "curated galleries with ordering" without new schema design. Useful for deciding how ambitious a content model can be in v1.
  • Storage and compliance posture. Public/private filesystem support plus authorization hooks lets you make a real decision about gated assets (paid content, customer documents, PII-adjacent uploads) instead of deferring it. If private-file support did not exist, those features would either be cut or require custom work.
  • Operational cost modeling. The regeneration Artisan command and image derivative pipeline imply a defined answer to "what happens when we change image sizes?" — relevant to migration/backfill planning and to whether you need a queue-based job or a one-off command.
  • Use cases well served: marketing/content sites, e-commerce product imagery, multi-tenant admin panels, internal tools needing document attachment, any Filament app where non-engineers upload assets.
  • Use cases poorly served: heavy video/transcoding pipelines, DAM-grade taxonomy and rights management, CDN-first delivery with on-the-fly transforms, or environments where Filament is not part of the stack.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when most of these hold:

  • The application is Laravel 12/13 on PHP 8.3–8.5 and, critically, Filament 5.8 — the admin UI and MediaPicker are the main value, so a non-Filament app captures materially less of the package.
  • You have two or more entities that will carry media. A single avatar field does not justify a dependency; polymorphic attachment value compounds with each additional media-bearing model.
  • You want private/gated files and per-record authorization rather than a public-disk-only approach.
  • Your team is willing to treat the package as an owned dependency — that means reading its upload pipeline, confirming its authorization hooks map to your policies, and pinning the version.
  • You need image derivatives and are comfortable with the package's conversion approach rather than a dedicated image service.

Look elsewhere or defer when:

  • Compatibility claims need verification. The matrix asserts Laravel 13 across PHP 8.3–8.5 — confirm Laravel 13 exists in your constraint set and that the CI matrix reflects a real, released framework version before committing. Treat the matrix as a claim to test against your own lockfile, not a guarantee.
  • Single-source maturity risk. v1.0.0 is the first stable release from a single maintainer. No prior assessment exists, which means no track record of upgrade hygiene. If the feature is business-critical, budget for a fork-or-replace contingency.
  • Filament is not in the stack, or you are on Filament 4.x — the UI layer is the differentiator and downgrading it leaves you with a thinner wrapper around what you could assemble from Flysystem and a conversion library.
  • You need transformations at the edge (signed URLs, on-the-fly resizing via a CDN) or heavy media processing (video, audio, PDF rendering).
  • Your asset model is the product — a full DAM with rights, versions, and workflows will outgrow this quickly.
  • Strict dependency-review or procurement gates that require a security review history, published advisories process, or maintainer redundancy.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a mature-ecosystem Laravel package that gives us a complete media management capability — uploads, secure storage, image resizing, and an admin UI — on day one, at the cost of a Composer dependency instead of an estimated multi-sprint build. It is at its first stable release with verified support for current PHP and Laravel versions. The trade-off is single-maintainer risk, which we mitigate by pinning the version and keeping the integration behind our own interface so it can be swapped.

To engineering: Smart Media Library v1.0.0 covers the parts of media handling we would otherwise write badly and repeatedly: a hardened upload pipeline, public/private disk abstraction, a polymorphic attachment model, an image conversion and regeneration pipeline, soft deletes, and an authorization hook surface. The MediaPicker component and grid/table admin views mean Filament-backed features get their UI for free. It ships with its own test suite and a CI compatibility matrix for PHP 8.3–8.5 and Laravel 12/13, plus Filament 5.8. Integration work is mostly mapping our policies onto their authorization hooks and confirming the conversion pipeline matches our storage and queue conventions.

Ask: Approve a timeboxed spike — install, wire it to one real entity, verify the compatibility claims against our lockfile, and validate the private-file and authorization paths. If the spike holds, standardize on it for all media features; if not, we will have written a thin adapter that makes replacement cheap.
