Linode Laravel Package

samuelmwangiw/linode

Laravel wrapper for the Linode API that lets you manage Linodes, volumes, domains, and other cloud resources directly from your PHP application. Includes a fluent interface, publishable configuration, and service provider integration for quick setup.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy on infrastructure plumbing. This package is a Laravel-native client for the Linode API built on Saloon. Choosing it over a hand-rolled Guzzle/cURL wrapper saves the ongoing cost of tracking Linode API changes (pagination, error envelopes, auth headers, rate limits) and removes a class of work that rarely differentiates the product.
  • Roadmap feasibility for Linode-backed features. Directly unblocks or de-risks roadmap items such as automated provisioning (instance create/resize/rebuild), DNS zone and record management, block storage and volume lifecycle, NodeBalancer setup, and account/billing readouts surfaced in an admin panel.
  • Self-service and ops tooling. Enables internal tooling and customer-facing self-serve flows (spin up a box, point a domain, attach storage) without an intermediary service or a separate microservice in another language.
  • Vendor portability as a design constraint. Because the package is a thin Saloon wrapper rather than a full abstraction layer, the strategic bet is "Linode only, for now." If the roadmap includes multi-cloud or provider abstraction, that should be a deliberate architecture decision made alongside—not after—adopting this.
  • Maintenance-risk acceptance. A single-maintainer community package is an accepted dependency risk. The v2.4.0 release (Saloon v3 bump) is the first concrete signal to weigh: the package is alive and tracking its upstream, but it also inherits upstream churn onto your upgrade path.
  • Release/upgrade budgeting. v2.4.0 is a major transitive dependency bump, not a feature release. That means an upgrade ticket, a regression pass on every Linode integration point, and a dependency-resolution check against any Saloon usage already in the app—cost that should be planned, not absorbed silently.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • The application is Laravel/PHP and Linode is the chosen or shortlisted infrastructure provider.
  • Needs are covered by the endpoints the package actually wraps—provisioning, DNS, compute, volumes. Validate against a coverage matrix of the endpoints you require before committing.
  • The team already uses Saloon, or would otherwise hand-roll HTTP calls; the wrapper composes cleanly with Saloon's request/response and testing patterns, which keeps integration tests readable.
  • Low operational appetite: a small team that would rather consume a maintained client than own one.
  • You want a plain, low-magic dependency with no proprietary abstraction you would have to unwind later.

Look elsewhere or pause when:

  • You already use Saloon v2 directly. v2.4.0 moves this package to Saloon v3, a major version. If other parts of the app pin Saloon v2, you will hit a dependency-resolution conflict and must either migrate those call sites or stay on v2.3.0. Verify Composer constraints and run the full suite before merging.
  • You need complete, typed coverage of the Linode API. A thin wrapper will leave gaps; plan for occasional custom Saloon requests alongside it.
  • The stack is not Laravel/PHP, or the app is mid-migration off Laravel—the value here is framework integration, and it evaporates without it.
  • You require a formally supported SDK with an SLA. This is community-maintained; treat it accordingly and be prepared to fork or vendor it.
  • You need provider abstraction across multiple clouds—this package is deliberately Linode-specific and will not generalize.
  • Bus-factor tolerance is low and no one on the team can read and patch Saloon-based code.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is a small, focused library that lets our Laravel application talk to Linode directly, instead of us building and maintaining that plumbing ourselves. It is a buy-not-build decision: modest dependency, no license cost, and it removes weeks of undifferentiated integration work from the roadmap. The trade-off is a community-maintained package with one primary author—acceptable for infrastructure glue, and bounded because it is thin enough to replace or vendor if it goes stale. The latest release (v2.4.0) is a maintenance update that tracks a major version of its underlying HTTP library; it carries a small, scoped upgrade cost rather than new capability.

For engineering: It is a Saloon-based Linode client. Requests are ordinary Saloon request classes, so mocking with Saloon's recording/faking utilities keeps tests fast and offline. v2.4.0 bumps the Saloon dependency to v3—a major version—so treat this as an upgrade task, not a patch: check composer constraints against any existing Saloon v2 usage, expect possible adjustments where we extend or customize the client's connectors and requests, and run the full integration suite. Pin to v2.3.0 if a Saloon v2 constraint elsewhere blocks us. The package is a thin wrapper, so expect to author a few custom requests for endpoints it does not cover; keep those in our namespace rather than forking where possible. Single-maintainer risk is real—keep our usage behind a thin internal service or interface so a fork or swap stays cheap.
