Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for network-share storage: this package gives Laravel's Storage facade a driver for SMB/CIFS shares and UNC paths (\\server\share). Adopting it replaces a bespoke path-normalization + transfer layer that is tedious to own and rarely differentiates the product.
  • Feature enablement: any workflow where generated or ingested files must land on a customer's existing corporate file server — report/PDF drops to a shared drive, ingesting exports from a legacy NAS, document management over Windows shares — rather than in object storage.
  • Roadmap / deployment topology: supports on-prem and hybrid go-to-market where the customer will not (yet) approve a cloud storage migration. It lets a storage decision be deferred without blocking a sale or a launch.
  • Use cases to scope: Windows-domain environments, DFS namespaces, mapped-drive migrations, and batch pipelines reading from shares. Poor fit for high-concurrency or large-object-throughput workloads.
  • Release cadence signal: 2.0.7 is a patch-level bugfix ("Fix route from unc to smb"), i.e. path-routing edge cases are still being found and closed. That is normal for a filesystem adapter and a mild positive for maintenance, but it means your own integration tests — not the package's — are the real safety net for your specific path shapes.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • A Laravel service must read/write to SMB/CIFS shares or UNC paths, and you want it behind Storage::disk(...) with no domain-code churn.
  • The deployment has network line-of-sight to the file servers and credentials/identity can be managed (domain service account, secrets store).
  • The alternative is maintaining a custom Flysystem adapter — a small but permanent maintenance tax with security-sensitive surface (credential handling, path traversal, encoding).
  • You need incremental adoption: one disk alongside existing local/S3 disks, easily feature-flagged per tenant.

Look elsewhere when:

  • The architecture is cloud-only and S3/GCS/Azure Blob semantics (versioning, object lock, lifecycle) are actually required.
  • Workloads are high-throughput, highly parallel, or latency-sensitive — SMB protocol overhead and per-operation round trips will dominate.
  • Compliance forbids direct app-to-file-server connections, or egress to shares is not permitted; a broker/agent pattern is the better shape.
  • You need rich POSIX permission modeling or advanced locking semantics the adapter doesn't expose.

Adoption criteria before committing:

  • Read the 2.0.0 upgrade notes: you are entering on a major version, so pin it and treat any future 2.x minor as reviewable.
  • Validate against your real path inventory — UNC with and without trailing separators, DFS namespaces, mapped drives, IPv6 hosts, and credentials embedded in the URL. The 2.0.7 fix specifically touches UNC-to-SMB route construction, so these are the paths most likely to have surprised someone.
  • Add integration tests against a containerized or staging SMB target in CI; unit tests with mocks will not catch routing regressions of this class.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This package lets us deploy into customers who require files to live on their existing corporate file servers, rather than forcing a storage migration before we can ship. That removes a recurring blocker in on-prem and hybrid deals at near-zero incremental cost. It is a thin adapter, not a platform commitment: small surface area, patch-only release history in the current line, and it sits behind Laravel's standard storage interface so we can swap it out or run it per-tenant without touching product code.

For engineering: It is a Flysystem adapter for SMB/UNC, wired in through the Storage facade — a disk config change, not an architectural one. 2.0.7 fixes UNC-to-SMB route handling, which is exactly the kind of path-normalization logic we would otherwise hand-roll and own forever. Adoption plan: pin the version, read the 2.0.0 upgrade notes, stand up a staging share, and land integration tests over our real path shapes before the first production disk. No breaking changes in this release; no migration required.
