Sonata Translation Bundle Laravel Package

salim/sonata-translation-bundle

A Sonata Admin bundle for managing Symfony translations from the admin panel. It provides an interface to browse, edit, and organize translation messages, helping teams maintain multilingual content without leaving Sonata. Designed to simplify translation workflows in Sonata-powered backends.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Localization roadmap for admin tooling. This bundle targets one narrow job: exposing translation editing inside SonataAdminBundle (Symfony), so content editors can manage localized fields without a developer. It informs the decision of whether your admin panel supports multi-language content authoring at all — a prerequisite for launching in additional markets.
  • Build vs. buy vs. fork for admin i18n. The realistic choice is rarely "adopt this package" — it is "spike on it, then build in-house or fork." It is useful as a reference implementation of how Sonata admin forms wire up translation tabs/locales, which can shorten an internal build by a few days.
  • Stack scope correction (important). Despite the brief's framing, this is a Symfony bundle, not a Laravel package. If the product surface is Laravel, this is out of scope entirely; that alone can close the decision.
  • Platform/vendor consolidation. A 1-star, 0-dependent, NOASSERTION-licensed dependency pushes the roadmap toward a single sanctioned i18n approach (e.g., A2LiX TranslationFormBundle or KnpLabs DoctrineBehaviors on the Symfony side, or an in-house admin translation UI) rather than per-team one-offs.
  • Risk register entry for the admin CMS. If your CMS layer is Sonata-based and translation editing is a launch blocker, this becomes an explicit "accept technical debt or fund the work" tradeoff to put in front of stakeholders.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only when all of the following hold:

  • You are already running Symfony + SonataAdminBundle in production, and the admin is the primary content-authoring surface.
  • You need localized entity fields editable in the admin this sprint and have no maintained bundle already wired in.
  • You are prepared to vendor/fork the code into your repo, read every line, and own it — treating it as sample code, not a dependency you track upstream.
  • Legal has reviewed it: NOASSERTION means there is no recognized OSI license, so default copyright applies. That is a blocker for redistribution and often for commercial use without written permission.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are on Laravel — irrelevant by construction.
  • You need a dependency with security patching, upgrade paths, or a maintainer. One star, zero dependents, and no declared license means the bus factor is one and effectively zero community signal (a composite score of ~0.065 reflects exactly that).
  • Translation editing is core to the product rather than incidental admin convenience — build it in-house so you own the UX and the data model.
  • Your Symfony version is current; a bundle with this little activity is unlikely to track recent SonataAdmin releases, and you will spend more time on compatibility than on features.
  • Compliance, procurement, or an SBOM requirement applies — you cannot enumerate provenance for unlicensed code.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a very small, unmaintained community add-on that adds multi-language editing to a specific PHP admin framework. It is not something we should depend on. We are treating it — at most — as a one-week spike or reference implementation to accelerate our own localization admin work, not as a purchase or a long-term dependency. There is no cost to evaluate it, and no meaningful risk if we keep it isolated. The real decision is whether to fund localization tooling in our admin panel; this package only changes how quickly we can prototype that, not whether we should do it. Note also that its license is undeclared, so we would not ship it as-is.

To engineering: It's a Symfony/SonataAdmin bundle with a single maintainer, one star, no dependents, and no recognized license. Treat it as read-only prior art: clone it, extract the pattern for translation-aware admin forms, then implement against our own entity/translation model. Do not add it to composer.json in a shared or production codebase. If you do prototype with it, pin the commit, vendor the source, and timebox it. Confirm the actual stack fit first — if our product surface is Laravel, this is a non-starter and we close the ticket.
