Socket Laravel Package

rxnet/socket

A lightweight Laravel/PHP socket package for creating, connecting, reading, writing, and closing TCP or Unix socket connections through a simple API.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Real-time feature scoping: Informs whether to ship live notifications, chat, presence indicators, collaborative editing, or live dashboards in a given release — the package is the underlying transport layer those features would sit on.
  • Build vs. buy vs. adopt: Acts as a data point in the decision between (a) a self-hosted socket server inside the Laravel monolith, (b) a managed real-time vendor (Pusher, Ably, PubNub), or (c) an in-house implementation. This package represents the "adopt a lightweight OSS layer" branch of that tree.
  • Roadmap sequencing: Helps decide whether real-time is a v1 differentiator or a v2+ infrastructure investment, since a zero-maintenance socket dependency keeps the cost of "yes, we'll do real-time eventually" low on paper.
  • Architecture standardization: A decision to standardize on a single socket abstraction affects how many transports (WebSocket, long-poll, raw TCP) the team must support, and whether the platform can run behind the existing load balancer or needs sticky sessions / a separate process manager.
  • Cost modeling for infrastructure: Supports the comparison of a self-hosted socket process (ops time, server cost) against per-connection vendor pricing — the core input to the "is this worth building" conversation.

When to Consider This Package

Consider only if:

  • You are maintaining a legacy Laravel 5.x-era application whose dependency constraints already match this package's era (last release September 2018).
  • The scope is a time-boxed spike or internal prototype where a throwaway socket layer is acceptable and no production SLA applies.
  • You have in-house PHP capacity to read, fork, and patch the source, since community support, documentation, and issue triage should all be assumed absent (0 stars, 0 dependents).
  • Your real-time needs are modest and single-node — a handful of concurrent connections, no horizontal fan-out requirement.

Look elsewhere if:

  • You are on Laravel 8/9/10/11 or PHP 8.x — a 2018 package is unlikely to have been validated against modern framework and runtime changes; compatibility must be proven with a spike before any commitment.
  • Real-time is customer-facing and revenue-adjacent. With no dependents and no recent releases, there is no evidence of production hardening, no security response path, and no upgrade cadence.
  • You need documentation, community answers, or hiring-market familiarity — none of which this package offers.
  • You need scale-out, clustering, or managed observability. Prefer first-party options (Laravel Reverb / Echo, Swoole or RoadRunner integrations) or a managed vendor, all of which carry support and talent-availability advantages.
  • You need a license/security review for enterprise procurement; an unmaintained dependency will typically fail that gate regardless of code quality.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: A community socket package is on the table for our real-time roadmap. It is free and lightweight, but effectively unmaintained — last release in 2018, no visible user base. I would not put it on a customer-facing path. My recommendation is to treat it as a prototype-only accelerator, and to budget for either a maintained first-party option (Laravel's own Reverb/Echo stack) or a managed vendor when we commit to real-time in production. The cost difference is small relative to the operational and security risk of owning an abandoned dependency.

To engineering: Validate compatibility with our Laravel and PHP versions in a one-day spike before we discuss it further. If it works, use it behind an internal interface so we can swap the transport later without touching feature code. Assume we own the source — no upstream fixes, no CVE response. If the spike shows friction, default to Reverb/Echo (first-party, maintained, familiar to Laravel hires) or a managed provider, and let this package inform the decision rather than make it.
