Product Decisions This Supports
- Deprecation triage / tech-debt planning: This release (1.4.2) is a deprecation notice, not a feature release. The relevant product decision is no longer "should we adopt this?" but "when do we remove it?" Treat it as a scheduled migration item in the backlog rather than a new dependency evaluation.
- Build vs. buy vs. use the platform: The maintainer's own guidance is to use Filament's built-in colour picker. This is a "platform already covers it" outcome — the correct decision is to delete the dependency and lean on framework functionality, avoiding vendor code entirely.
- Roadmap sequencing for admin/panel UI: If a product surface uses this field (form colour inputs in a Filament admin panel), schedule the swap as part of the next Filament upgrade or a low-risk UI-only sprint, since the replacement is behaviourally similar and the blast radius is limited to form fields.
- Risk register entry: An unmaintained third-party Filament field is a future compatibility hazard — it can break on the next Filament major version, and security/patch support ends now. This is a small, cheap-to-close risk that should be closed rather than carried.
- Not a differentiator: Colour-picker selection has no product-strategy value. Do not spend discovery time on alternatives beyond the built-in field; there is no meaningful UX advantage worth the maintenance cost.
When to Consider This Package
Do not adopt for new work. As of 1.4.2 the package is explicitly deprecated by its maintainer, who points users to Filament's built-in colour picker. New adoption would mean taking on a dependency with no forward path.
Consider it only in narrow legacy situations:
- An existing, pinned Filament version where the built-in picker is absent or behaves differently, and the migration cost is not yet funded. In that case, pin the current version, document the deprecation, and set a removal date.
- You need a Filament form field and are already inside a Filament panel — but even here, prefer the built-in field.
Look elsewhere when:
- You are starting fresh, or on Filament v2+/v3+: use the built-in colour picker and add zero dependencies.
- You need a colour picker outside of Filament (plain Blade/Livewire): evaluate a JS-level picker directly rather than a framework-coupled wrapper.
- You require active maintenance, security patching, or a support SLA — none of which a deprecated package offers.
Migration note for PM planning: the swap is typically a field-class rename plus verifying the stored value format (hex string, nullable) matches what the built-in field emits; existing database values generally carry over unchanged, so this is usually a small engineering task rather than a data migration.
How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)
To executives: This dependency is retired by its author, and the functionality is already included in our Filament framework. We should remove it in the next maintenance window — a small, low-risk change that eliminates an unmaintained component from our stack before it breaks during a framework upgrade. No user-facing change is expected; the cost of waiting is a future upgrade blocker.
To engineering: The package is deprecated as of 1.4.2 and the upstream recommendation is Filament's built-in colour picker. Plan to replace the field, confirm stored values remain compatible (typically hex strings, unchanged), remove the composer dependency, and add a regression check on any form that captured colour input. Do not take new dependencies on it, and do not upgrade it further — pin if a legacy panel still needs it, with a removal ticket attached.
