Laravel Laravel Package

runtime/laravel

Runtime for Laravel integrates the Runtime PHP application server with Laravel, giving you a simple way to serve requests, run workers, and deploy apps with minimal configuration. It handles the glue code so you can focus on building your Laravel application.

Technical Evaluation

  • Architecture fit: runtime/laravel is a Laravel adapter for the php-runtime abstraction, intended to let a Laravel application run on PSR-7/PSR-15-compatible runtimes or worker-based servers rather than only PHP-FPM. A TPM should treat it as a runtime-portability layer, not a framework replacement. It fits when the organization wants to standardize long-running workers, reduce per-request bootstrap overhead, or avoid hard coupling to a single runtime such as RoadRunner/Swoole/Octane-like models.
  • Integration feasibility: Composer-installable, MIT-licensed, and likely introduced through a small bootstrap/runtime entrypoint change. Feasibility is high for a controlled pilot, but evidence is thin: 18 stars, 0 dependents, and a recent release date mean there is little public production validation. The TPM should require a compatibility spike against the exact Laravel/PHP version and target runtime before committing.
  • Technical risk: Primary risks are early-stage adoption, low bus factor, limited community support, undocumented lifecycle edge cases, and compatibility lag with Laravel releases. Long-running runtimes introduce state-leakage risks: container bindings, singletons, request context, sessions, cookies, file uploads, streaming responses, exception handling, and terminators must be explicitly validated. Security review is needed for request/response bridging and worker lifecycle behavior.
  • Key questions: Which runtime servers are officially supported and tested? Which Laravel and PHP versions are covered? Does it reset application/container state between requests? How are streaming, uploads, sessions, cookies, middleware, and exception rendering handled? What is the maintainer cadence and governance model? Can we pin, wrap, and fall back to PHP-FPM without application changes? Is it redundant or conflicting with Laravel Octane in our stack?

Integration Approach

  • Stack fit: Best fit is a Laravel codebase already using Composer and evaluating PSR-7/PSR-15 runtimes, worker-based serving, or runtime portability. If the stack is PHP-FPM-only and stable, the package adds little immediate value. If the stack already uses Laravel Octane, evaluate overlap carefully; runtime/laravel may be redundant, complementary, or conflicting depending on the target runtime.
  • Migration path: Start with a non-critical internal service. Add the package behind an isolated runtime entrypoint, keep the existing FPM path available, and run dual-path canaries. Measure boot time, p95/p99 latency, memory growth, error rate, and worker restart behavior before expanding. Rollback must be a configuration change, not an application rewrite.
  • Compatibility: Pin an exact package version and define a supported matrix for Laravel, PHP, runtime server, extensions, and middleware. Test first- and third-party packages that rely on request lifecycle assumptions. Verify transitive dependency constraints, security advisory monitoring, and whether an internal fork or patch policy is required.
  • Sequencing: 1) technical spike and source review; 2) security and lifecycle assessment; 3) benchmark against current FPM/Octane baseline; 4) pilot one low-risk service; 5) harden observability, state reset, and graceful shutdown; 6) expand only if SLOs and operability gates pass; 7) upstream fixes or maintain an internal fork if the package becomes strategically important. The TPM should frame this as an evidence-gated runtime experiment, not a platform-wide mandate.

Operational Impact

  • Maintenance: Low adoption implies the organization will likely own much of the operational knowledge. Plan for version pinning, dependency monitoring, and a fork/patch contingency. Avoid making it a critical-path dependency without either maintainer commitment or internal ownership.
  • Support: There is no commercial support implied. Escalation will depend on the public issue tracker, maintainer responsiveness, and internal runbooks. A TPM should identify an internal owner and document troubleshooting for runtime startup, worker crashes, and request lifecycle anomalies.
  • Scaling: Worker-based runtimes can improve throughput and resource efficiency, but scaling shifts from FPM process management to worker-pool sizing, memory limits, graceful reloads, health checks, and backpressure. Capacity planning must account for long-lived state and memory growth, not just request concurrency.
  • Failure modes: Watch for state bleed between requests, stale container bindings, memory leaks, middleware incompatibility, request/response streaming defects, timeout mismatches, worker crashes, and silent behavioral differences from FPM. Use canaries, synthetic checks, structured logs, and automatic fallback to the existing serving path during the pilot.
  • Ramp-up: Teams need training on runtime lifecycle, PSR-7/PSR-15 semantics, worker tuning, and graceful shutdown. Because the package is niche, knowledge will be concentrated; budget for documentation and pair-review. Ramp-up cost is moderate for a small pilot and higher if adopted as a shared platform standard.
