Getting Started

v0.2.1 is a patch-level release whose only note is “Accesibility” (likely accessibility). Treat it as a low-risk but unverified accessibility-focused update until you inspect the changelog and diff. There is no prior assessment, so establish a baseline before adopting.

Start here:

  1. Read README.md, CHANGELOG.md, and composer.json to confirm Laravel/PHP version support.
  2. Inspect the service provider and any config/*.php, resources/views, resources/lang, and published asset tags.
  3. Run composer update <vendor>/<package> in a branch and review the lockfile diff.
  4. Publish only what you need: php artisan vendor:publish --tag=<package-config>, --tag=<package-views>, --tag=<package-lang>, or assets.
  5. Render the package’s primary UI surface in a scratch route or test: form controls, validation messages, modal/dialog, navigation, or notification component.

First use case: install the package, publish its config/views if required, render one representative component in a Blade view, then run a keyboard-only pass and an automated accessibility scan before integrating it into real screens.

Implementation Patterns

Use the package as the default rendering layer for the accessibility-sensitive UI it covers, rather than mixing it with hand-written markup. For Laravel apps this usually means:

  • Blade components: prefer package components/slots over raw HTML for forms, buttons, alerts, dialogs, and error summaries.
  • Form integration: pair package inputs with Laravel validation errors, old(), @error, and localized labels. Confirm that error IDs and aria-describedby references are generated correctly.
  • Configuration first: keep package behavior in config/<package>.php; avoid editing vendor files. Publish views only when you need controlled overrides.
  • Localization: publish/override language files for labels, screen-reader text, and validation summaries. Keep accessible names meaningful in every locale.
  • Livewire/Alpine/Inertia: test focus management and ARIA state after DOM morphs, modal opens/closes, validation updates, and async notifications. Accessibility fixes often depend on state changes, not initial render.
  • CI pattern: add a browser test that renders key components and runs axe-core, pa11y, or Lighthouse; supplement with keyboard-only tests for focus order, Escape handling, and focus return.
  • Upgrade pattern: in a branch, update the package, clear caches, run unit/feature/browser tests, then diff rendered HTML for changed ARIA attributes, IDs, classes, and focus behavior.

Day-to-day workflow: use package components in normal feature work, override via published views only for app-specific needs, and keep accessibility checks in the same test suite as functional tests.

Gotchas and Tips

  • The release note is sparse and misspelled. Do not assume v0.2.1 covers every accessibility issue; inspect the actual diff/changelog and test the components you use.
  • Patch releases can still change rendered markup. Snapshot tests, CSS selectors, JS hooks, and Dusk selectors may break if IDs, classes, aria-*, or DOM order changed.
  • Published views and language files go stale. After upgrading, compare published overrides against the package’s current originals; missing new ARIA attributes is a common failure.
  • Clear caches after updating: php artisan view:clear, config:clear, route:clear, and any asset/build cache. In production, rebuild frontend assets if the package ships CSS/JS.
  • Check focus management explicitly: modal/dialog focus trapping, focus return on close, skip links, and aria-live announcements often fail only after interaction.
  • Validate generated IDs are unique when multiple components appear on one page. Duplicate id/aria-describedby targets break assistive technology.
  • Do not override ARIA attributes blindly in Blade attribute bags or published views. Preserve package-provided role, aria-*, and described-by wiring unless you have tested the replacement.
  • Automated scans catch only part of accessibility. Combine axe/pa11y with keyboard navigation, zoom/reflow checks, reduced-motion checks, RTL/localized labels, and screen-reader smoke tests.
  • Debugging path: inspect the browser accessibility tree, compare rendered HTML before/after upgrade, run the package’s tests, then test with config cached and uncached.
  • Extension points to prefer: config values, published views/lang files, component slots and attribute bags, and package events/macros if documented. Avoid monkey-patching vendor code.
